Lindsay And Smith Named UCHealth CU Athletes Of The Week

October 12, 2017 | Football, Volleyball

This week's UCHealth CU Athletes of the week goes to football player Phillip Lindsay and volleyball's Alexa Smith. A lot of scoring took place this past Saturday at Folsom Field. Lindsay posted a monster line of 41 rushes for 281 yards and 3 scores. He also added four receptions for an additional 39 yards through the air. Lindsay became CU's all-time leader in all-purpose yards with 4,989, passing Rodney Stewart (4,669 from 2008-11). His 320 all-purpose yards were the seventh-most in school history for one game. He now has 3,043 rushing yards, as he moved from sixth to fourth, passing Charlie Davis (2,958, 1971-73) and Bobby Purify (3,016, 2000-04).  He trails Eric Bieniemy (3,940, 1987-90), Rodney Stewart (3,598, 2008-11) and Rashaan Salaam (3,057, 1991-93) as he is the fifth to eclipse 3,000 yards. This was the tailback's ninth career 100-yard game and second career 200-yard effort. The Buffalo now has 605 career yards in four games against Arizona, the most yards gained in school history against one opponent (he shattered the old mark of 508 by Eric Bieniemy vs. Missouri). His three touchdowns gives him 198 points for his career, tying Rashaan Salaam for seventh all-time. The senior Buff has scored at least one rushing TD in all six games, and became the fifth CU player to score 30 career rushing touchdowns. Lindsay's 41 rushing attempts on Saturday broke a 40-year old school record which was set by James Mayberry in 1977.

For the volleyball team, it was Alexa Smith who stole the show this week. Smith led the CU team last weekend, averaging 4.57 kills per set and 3.57 digs per set. The Buffalo started the weekend off with 24 kills against Washington State, just one shy of her career-high. This week's standout hit .304 and also tallied 14 digs and two blocks in the effort. Two days later, Smith recorded eight kills against No. 9 Washington and added 11 kills. Smith has led her team to a very respectable 12-5 overall record.
