Buffs get big fourth quarter efforts from Steven Montez and Bryce Bobo; Phillip Lindsay has yet another monster game

Buffs Prevail Behind Fourth Quarter Execution

October 14, 2017 | Football

BOULDER – It was a tough first three quarters, but when it came down to crunch time Colorado quarterback Steven Montez came through for the Buffaloes in its 36-33 victory over Oregon State at Reser Stadium.

Montez was 6-of-14 passing for only 100 yards through three quarters. He was sacked twice and Colorado's offense as a whole was 3-of-8 on third downs, on the field for 19 fewer minutes than the Beavers were and had run 39 plays to Oregon State's 62.

That all turned around in the fourth.

Montez was 8-of-10 passing for 68 yards and two touchdowns – both to Bryce Bobo – while also adding 29 yards rushing on four carries in the final 15 minutes. Colorado was 4-of-4 on third down tries and gained 167 yards in that decisive fourth quarter.

"He's a big target with a big body down there on some of those bang slants," head coach Mike MacIntyre said. "He throws those the best more than anything and Bobo catches them really well."

CU only had two drives in the fourth, and those were executed magnificently.

The first was a 18-play, 88-yard touchdown drive over 6:26 that gave Colorado a 29-26 lead. The Buffs picked up six first downs on the drive – six.

It ended when Montez connected with Bobo for a 9-yard touchdown pass on third-and-goal. Colorado went for two, and it was Montez to Bobo there for the conversion, Bobo making a gutsy catch in the back of the end zone while getting drilled by a defender.

Oregon State countered with a 10-play, 84-yard scoring drive to retake the lead, 33-29, with 4:35 left in the game.

After the kickoff, Colorado took over at its own 18 and began another march. This time it took nine plays before it was Montez to Bobo again for the winning points. Colorado picked up five first downs on that drive and from 13 yards out, the Buffs ran the same exact play as their last touchdown pass and it had the same result that turned out to be the game-winner.

Bobo and Lindsay's efforts were crucial in the victory.

Bobo had a career-high 126 yards receiving and his two-touchdown game was the first since his redshirt freshman year against UCLA. He also threw a touchdown pass to Steven Montez late in the second quarter.

Lindsay, who had the best game of his career a week ago when he ran for 281 yards and three touchdowns, produced yet another monster game.

He had 28 carries for 185 yards, two touchdowns and earned nine first downs in the game. In his last two contests he has rushed 69 times for 466 yards and five touchdowns – the fourth-best two-game stretch by a Buff in school history.

Lindsay now is just five yards short of 1,000 on the season – he would become the first Colorado tailback ever to run for over a 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons.
