Barton Going Strong In First Season In Boulder

October 03, 2017 | Soccer

CU hosts No. 20 California on Thursday and No. 2 Stanford on Sunday

BOULDER – Colorado sophomore Tatum Barton is enjoying her first season in Boulder as she has helped the Buffs to a 7-2-3 record so far. She currently has four goals and two assists and has started six of the past seven matches.

Barton transferred this summer from Texas Tech, where she saw significant action as a freshman by appearing in 18 matches and making nine starts.

But the native of Littleton, Colorado, was missing home after her first season and decided to give CU a try after turning it down out of high school to go out of state. Her final choice as a prep was between CU and Texas Tech and she was looking to get away from home so she chose to move to Lubbock.

"Everyone was [wants] to go out of state until they actually go out of state," Barton joked.

"She is a player that we recruited out of high school," head coach Danny Sanchez said. "We were excited when she reached out and said that she wanted to transfer. She was local product out of Columbine [High School] and Real Colorado Soccer Club, so we knew her quality as a player [from seeing her locally]. She has really impressed us on what kind of quality teammate she is. She brings a positive attitude every day, she works hard, she wants to get better, and she isn't afraid of competition."

Barton came back to Colorado because she was looking for more from a soccer standpoint. She also missed the natural beauty of her home state, the weather, and her family and friends.

"So far it has been really good," Barton said of returning to Colorado. "I have really liked the team. They were so welcoming when I first came so that was a big part about feeling comfortable."

Barton brings a lot to the Buffs from a soccer standpoint. This season, she has a pair of braces under her belt, scoring twice in a 3-0 win against BYU and the first two goals in a 6-1 win at Denver.

"She is a real physical presence in the final third [of the field]," head coach Danny Sanchez said. "She holds the ball up really well and she competes for everything. She is working hard on cleaning up her play around the box."

She feels she made the right decision to come back home after leaving for a year. Sanchez believes her choice to return to Colorado will pay off down the line and that she has a bright future.

"Not having the spring under her belt and just jumping in during the summer is difficult," Sanchez said. "I think that the transition into the team has been good. I think longer term, continuing to do well this season [is one of her goals]. Especially during the spring, next summer, and into next fall, we really want her game to continually evolve. We need her to build off of the strengths she already has, but really the main piece is cleaning up her play around the [18-yard box]. She has a lot of physical tools so it is a matter of cleaning them up and having her be a more proficient striker."

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
California comes into the weekend ranked No. 20 in the nation. The Bears are 8-2-1 overall and tied with CU for fifth place in the Pac-12 with a 1-1-1 conference mark. They own wins over No. 24 Santa Clara (2-1) and No. 14 Oklahoma State (3-0). In conference play, they won 1-0 at Washington, before drawing 1-1 with Arizona State and falling 1-0 to Arizona at home.

Abi Kim leads Cal with five goals. The sophomore was named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman team last season after scoring three goals and adding three assists. She had a brace against UC Irvine to open the season in a 2-1 win and has also scored against Santa Clara, Sacramento State and Arizona State.

Miranda Nild missed some action early in the season but has returned to the lineup and has four goals and an assist in eight matches. Seven Bears players have scored one goal each. Freshman midfielder Daisy Cleverley missed two matches to play for the New Zealand National Team with CU freshman Marty Puketapu.

Defensively, Cal is led by Indigo Gibson, who earned Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19 and was named to Top Drawer Soccer's top 100 players before the season. She has helped Emily Boyd, who was named Top Drawer Soccer third-team Preseason All-America, at goalkeeper. Boyd has a 0.53 goals-against average and .818 save percentage, playing all 1,023 minutes in goal for the Bears.

Stanford enters the weekend ranked No. 2 in the country and boasts a 10-1-0 record, including a perfect 3-0-0 in the Pac-12. The Cardinal have won eight consecutive matches after a 3-2 loss to No. 8 Florida early in the season. During a three-match stretch against Navy, San Francisco and Yale, Stanford outscored its opponents 22-0. The Cardinal also have a 4-0 win over No. 10 Georgetown and have defeated Washington State, Arizona and Arizona State in Pac-12 play.

Freshman Catarina Macario leads Stanford in goals (9) and assists (6, tied for lead) so far. She has been nothing but consistent, scoring at least one goal in eight of the team's 11 matches with two scores in a 5-0 win against Wisconsin. Kyra Carusa is second with eight goals and has three assists. The two-time second-team All-Pac-12 striker has a pair of two goal matches (vs. Marquette and Navy).

Sophomore midfielder Jaye Boissiere saw action in just nine matches last season, but has emerged to start 10 times already this season and has five goals and six assists. Junior midfielder Jordan DiBiasi was named second-team all-region last year and has four goals and five assists this season. Senior midfielder Andi Sullivan is on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and has twice been called up to the USWNT. This season, she has one goal and six assists after 11 goals and seven assists as a junior.

Defensively, Alana Cook has led the way, starting all 11 matches in the back. She was a second-team All-Pac-12 selection last year and the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2015. Sophomore defender Tierna Davidson has earned two USWNT call-ups, including recently against New Zealand, and has two goals and one assist this season. She is also on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Alison Jahansouz and Lauren Rood have split time in goal this season. Rood has a 0.17 GAA and .857 save percentage, while Jahansouz has a 0.67 GAA and .714 save percentage.
