Soccer Season Wrap-Up

BOULDER - Colorado's soccer team finished the 2017 season 12-6-4 overall, including 5-4-2 in the Pac-12, to finish sixth in the conference and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Several records were broken throughout the season. Season notes and updated record books are attached in the PDF files.

Notes:
NCAA Tournament

•    CU was selected to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in the program's 22nd season.
•    The Buffs are 9-10-1 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, including 5-4-0 under head coach Danny Sanchez after the season-ending 1-0 loss at No. 2 North Carolina.
•    It was the fourth postseason appearance in the last five seasons for the Buffs.

All-Region
•    Taylor Kornieck (first team), Joss Orejel (second team), Jalen Tompkins (third team) and Becca Rasmussen (third team) were all named to the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region team.
•    The four all-region honorees is tied for the most in school history (also had four in 2005).

Buffs Reach 10 Wins
•    CU earned its 10th win of the season on Oct. 29 with a 2-0 victory at Oregon.
•    It is the fourth time in the past five seasons the Buffs have had at least 10 wins.
•    It is also the 12th time in the 22nd season of CU soccer with 10 or more wins.

Pac-12 Rankings
•    Jalen Tompkins finished the season second in the Pac-12 in save percentage (.882), third in goals-against average (0.58) and fourth in shutouts (9).
•    Taylor Kornieck was third in the Pac-12 in shot attempts (92).
•    Marty Puketapu was second in game-winning goals (5) and is tied for seventh in goals (8), and Becca Rasmussen was tied for seventh in assists (7).
•    As a team, the Buffs ranked third in GAA (0.61) and fifth in goals per game (1.41).

Another Clean Sheet
•    CU recorded its 13th shutout of the season on Oct. 29 in a 2-0 victory at Oregon, breaking the school record for shutouts in a season.
•    CU finished with 14 clean sheets.
•    The Buffs had 12 clean sheets in 2004 and 2014.
•    The team's 0.61 goals-against average is also the best in school history.

Tompkins Shutout Streak
•    Jalen Tompkins has a current shutout streak of 498:05 in Pac-12 matches, the longest in conference-only matches in school history.
•    Her record broke Jessica Keller's record of 463:55 from 2004 to 2005 in the Big 12 for the longest shutout streak in conference-only matches.
•    Tompkins also broke her own record for longest shutout streak in all matches (including non-conference) at 536:03, topping her previous time of 480:43 from 2016.
•    Tompkins currently owns three of the top five individual shutout streaks in CU history.

Tompkins Named Goalkeeper Of The Week (x3)
•    Jalen Tompkins was named Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week on Oct. 24.
•    She made 15 saves in two shutouts against Arizona State and Arizona.
•    Tompkins saved four shots in 45 minutes of a 3-0 win against ASU on Oct. 19 and made a season-high 11 saves in a scoreless draw with Arizona on Oct. 22.
•    Against Arizona, Tompkins made nine of her saves after halftime.
•    Tompkins earned the award again on Oct. 31, making nine saves in two shutouts at Oregon State and Oregon.
•    Tompkins won it once again on Nov. 7 after making five saves against Utah.
•    She is the first Pac-12 player since the conference switched to its current format in 2014 of an offensive player, defensive player and goalkeeper of the week to earn any of the three awards three consecutive weeks.

Tompkins Earns An Assist
•    Jalen Tompkins earned an assist in CU's 2-0 win at Utah to close out the regular season.
•    It was the first assist for a Buffs goalkeeper since Kate Scheele against Arizona in 2015.
•    Tompkins earned the assist by sending a free kick from CU's defensive zone to the top of the box, where Camilla Shymka headed it to Megan Massey, who scored on a strike from the top of the box.

Tompkins Breaks GAA And Save Percentage Records
•    Jalen Tompkins finished with a 0.58 goals-against average, the best in school history.
•    The previous record was 0.58 set by Kirstin Radlinski in 2008 (Tompkins finished 0.001 better).
•    Tompkins also has the best save percentage in school history, currently at .882.
•    Radlinski also held the save percentage record from 2008 at .855.

Puketapu Steps Up vs. ASU, In Pac-12 Play
•    Marty Puketapu scored twice in CU's 3-0 win over Arizona State on Oct. 19.
•    The Buffs entered the match with a 418:26 goalless drought, but Puketapu scored just 4:43 into the match to end the streak at 423:09.

Puketapu Among Top Pac-12 Freshmen
•    Marty Puketapu finished the season third among Pac-12 freshmen in goals scored.
•    She ranked 20th nationally among all freshmen.

Puketapu Named To New Zealand Squad Against USA
•    Marty Puketapu was named to the New Zealand National Team for its international friendlies against the United States in September.
•    She missed the match in Denver on Sept. 15, but returned on Sept. 19 and was a substitute in the 89th minute in a 5-0 loss to the USWNT in Cincinnati.
•    She played in three matches as a substitute in the Cyprus Cup in March for the Ferns.

Puketapu's Hat Trick
•    Marty Puketapu scored a hat trick with the first three goals of her career on Aug. 27 in a 6-0 win over UC Riverside.
•    She also had an assist for seven total points, tied for the third-most points ever in a match.
•    She scored her third goal at 21:44, the earliest hat trick in school history (previous was Nikki Marshall in 45:59 on Sept. 1, 2006).
•    Puketapu is the second freshman in CU history (joining Nikki Marshall in '06) to record a three-goal match and the fifth player of any class to score 3+ goals.

Orejel Pac-12 Player of the Week
•    Joss Orejel was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week on Aug. 29.
•    She led the Buffs to a 1-0 win over TCU on Aug. 25, keeping TCU from recording a shot on goal in the match, while assisting on Taylor Kornieck's goal.
•    On Aug. 27, Orejel was key in helping limit to UC Riverside to three total shot attempts in a 6-0 win, adding another assist in that match.

Kornieck With Another OT Goal
•    Taylor Kornieck scored her second career overtime goal to beat Colorado College on Aug. 20.
•    Her first career overtime goal beat No. 10 California on the road last season with two second left in the second overtime, the latest goal in school history.

•    Taylor Kornieck now ranks second in career goals scored in Pac-12 matches with seven, one behind 2016 graduate Danica Evans.
•    Freshman Marty Puketapu is fifth with four goals.

Buffs Earn Academic Award
•    CU earned United Soccer Coaches Team Academic honors for the sixth consecutive season under sixth-year head coach Danny Sanchez (it's the seventh time in school history).
•    Sanchez's 2016 team finished the 2016-17 school year with a 3.292 cumulative GPA after recording a 3.291 during the Spring Semester and a 3.227 during the 2016 Fall Semester.
•    The team has had a GPA of 3.0 or better for 17 consecutive semesters entering this fall, including 10 consecutive semesters of 3.2 or better.
•    Only CU's women's ski team has had a longer streak of consecutive semesters of 3.2 or better.
•    Nine Buffs were named Pac-12 All-Academic this season.

Buffs Start Season With Strong Defense
•    CU broke the school records for consecutive shutouts (both matches and minutes) in a 3-0 win over BYU on Sept. 4.
•    The shutout streak reached 621:10 (dating back to last season) until conceding a goal at Texas, topping the previous mark of 551:54.
•    CU has opened a season with three consecutive clean sheets four times--all have been under head coach Danny Sanchez (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017).
•    CU held TCU without a shot on goal on Aug. 25 and it was the first time since Sept. 20, 2013 (Stony Brook), that CU has held an opponent without a shot on goal, and the first time the Buffs have held a Power 5 opponent without a shot on goal since Baylor in 2008.
•    CU's had another shutout streak of 581:03 late in the season, the third-longest in school history, and the streak of five consecutive clean sheets was the second-longest ever.

Records Fall At Denver
•    CU broke three school records in a 6-1 win at Denver on Sept. 16.
•    Tatum Barton (46:23) and Taylor Kornieck (46:37) scored just 14 seconds apart for the fastest consecutive goals in school history and the 15th-fastest in NCAA history.
•    The previous fastest consecutive goals were by Ashlie Mihalcin (54:39) and Jen Thais (55:11) 32 seconds apart against Missouri on Sept. 26, 2003.
•    The Buffs also had seven assists, including six in the second half, breaking the previous records of six and five, respectively.
•    Barton had her second brace of the season and Joss Orejel had a goal and two assists in the win.
•    CU's six goals were also tied for the third most in school history.

Close Wins
•    CU was 8-4 in matches decided by one goal last season and won seven of those in a row until a 1-0 loss to No. 3 South Carolina to end the season.
•    This season, the Buffs went 4-2 in matches decided by one goal.
•    In Danny Sanchez's career, CU is 32-24 in matches decided by one goal.

Scoreless Draws
•    CU had four scoreless draws this season (at Colorado State, home vs. CSUN, at Washington, and home vs. Arizona).
•    The is the most scoreless draws ever in a season for the Buffs, topping the previous record of three in 2007.

Spring Recap
•    CU finished the spring with a 3-1-1 record, defeating Kansas State, Nebraska and Northern Colorado, losing to Wyoming and drawing with Air Force.

International Flavor
•    The Buffs have five international players on their roster this season, tying the most ever in school history (CU also had five last season).

•    Junior Sarah Kinzner and sophomore Camilla Shymka both hail from Calgary, Alberta, and both have been members of the Canada U-20 National Team.
•    Junior Isobel Dalton is a native of Australia and is the third Buff ever from Down Under.
•    Freshman Marty Puketapu is the first CU player from New Zealand and is a member of New Zealand's full women's national team.

Most Wins In School History In 2016
•    CU tied the school record for most wins in a season in 2016, improving to 15-5-1 against Oklahoma State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
•    The Buffs finished 15-6-1 after a 1-0 loss to No. 1-seed South Carolina in the second round of the postseason.
•    CU went 15-4-1 in 2003 and 15-6-2 in 2004.

Most Conference Wins In 2016
•    CU's win over No. 9 UCLA on Oct. 27 gave the Buffs their eighth win in Pac-12 play this season, tying the school record for most conference wins in a season.
•    CU went 8-1-1 in the Big 12 in 2003, winning its only conference championship that year.
•    CU's previous-best record in Pac-12 play was a 6-4-1 record in 2014, finishing in third place.

Best Turnaround In Pac-12 History In 2016
•    CU finished in a tie for second place last season in the Pac-12 after finishing in 12th (last) place in 2015, a jump of 10 places in the standings.
•    It was the best turnaround in Pac-12 history, besting Arizona's jump from ninth place to first place between 2003 and 2004.

Evans Drafted 22nd Overall
•    Danica Evans was the 22nd overall selection (second pick in the third round) by the Orlando Pride in the NWSL Draft in January.
•    She finished her first professional season with 12 appearances and made one start for the Pride, and scored her first career goal on April 22 to tie the game in a 1-1 draw with the Washington Spirit.
•    That goal was selected as the NWSL Goal of the Week.
•    The Pride finished the season 11-6-7 and in third place in the NWSL, while qualifying for the playoffs.
