Book Drive At Pair Of Men's Basketball Games This Weekend
March 01, 2017 | Men's Basketball
As the men's basketball regular season closes out this weekend with Stanford and California visiting Coors Events Center on Mar. 2 and 4, the Colorado Education Association will be hosting a book drive during those final two games for the National Education Association's Read Across America celebration.
For 20 years, millions of students and teachers have enjoyed this day devoted to reading, held annually on the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers.
Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school. Our student-athletes here at CU have done an incredible job promoting reading through our Read with the Buffs program.
Read with the Buffs is a reading incentive program for elementary school students. Participating teachers set reading goals for their students. If the goals are met the students are invited to a CU Women's Basketball game to celebrate their achievements.
CU student-athletes make a visit to each participating school for a classroom visit and read to the elementary school students. Â
This winter over 60 CU student-athletes visited Boulder Valley School District classrooms to read to students, answer questions, and emphasize the important of reading. In total more than 1,500 kids in 60 elementary school classes participated in the Read with the Buffs program.
We are proud to collaborate with CEA to bring reading excitement to children of all ages for Read Across America, but we need your help. Make sure you bring a new or used children's book to the games on March 2 and 4, and they will be donated to a local elementary school around the Boulder County area.
You can find the collection bins at the northwest and Regent Drive entrances.
Don't forget that Saturday's game against California is Senior Day for the Buffs. Four Buffs will be honored: Josh Fortune, Wesley Gordon, Xavier Johnson and Derrick White. The seniors will be honored prior to tip-off so make sure you get to Coors Events Center early to help honor and cheer on the seniors.
And you won't want to miss the inaugural Diaper Derby baby race to be held at halftime featuring the fastest babies on the Front Range. Participating babies will start at one baseline and crawl to their guardian at half court. Â Â Â
