Four Student-Athletes Receive Athlete of the Week Honors

March 01, 2017 | Men's Basketball, Track and Field, Lacrosse, Skiing

The Colorado Buffaloes took the road over the weekend and brought home success. Anne Siri Lervik (women's skiing) and David Ketterer (men's skiing) wowed the crowd on the slopes while Erin Clark (women's track) and Ben Saarel (men's track) ran away from the competition on the track. All four athletes share the honors for this week's Athlete of the Week.

Anne Siri Lervik of the women's Nordic team recorded her two highest finishes of the season at the 2017 RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championships, helping Colorado win its 28th RMISA title. She earned her first career podium finish on Saturday in the 5K classic race, finishing third. That was the highest finish of all Buffs in the race, leading Colorado's women's team to a victory in event with 90 total points. She placed fourth in Sunday's 15K freestyle. Her ending was crucial as it helped decide the overall meet winner. With 1.5K to go in the race (a half lap), DU races were held the top three positions. Entering the women's race, the last of the championships, the Buffs held a 15.5-point advantage on the Pioneers, but the Denver racers finished 1-2-3 that would have giving them the championship. Lervik in that final 1.5K was able to pass DU's Sylvia Nordskar and finish in fourth place and register the necessary points to help Colorado hold off the Pioneers and win the meet by a slim margin of 7.5 points. Before the championships, she had not placed inside the top-five in any of the first seven races of the season.

David Ketterer was Colorado's lone individual champion at the 2017 RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championships and helped CU as a team claim its 28th RMISA title. He won the giant slalom event to open up the championships on Friday. It was his first victory in a giant slalom race this season, but his fifth overall win. He was a total of four slalom races. His five overall event victories this year have tied for the second-most in a single season in school history with John Skajem's five in 1987. On Saturday in the slalom event, he finished in fourth place and now has finished fifth or better in 10 of 11 total races this season. His second run in the slalom event was timed at 54.35, which was the fastest single-run by any competitor in the field.

On to the track, Erin Clark took home the MPSF Conference title in the 5,000-meter race. She clocked a strong 15:50.96 PR time. Clark is the third consecutive Buff to win the event at the indoor conference championships as Kaitlyn Benner (2015) and Mackenzie Caldwell (2016) preceded her. This time also gives Clark the sixth-fastest time in the country. This is Erin's second MPSF conference title and third overall.

Ben Saarel earned the MPSF title in the mile after clocking a 4:02.33 time. He was able to hold off Oregon's Tim Gorman at the finish as Gorman finished with a time of 4:02.86. Saarel is now only the second Buff to win a conference title in the mile, along with former Buff Tom Reese, who won it in 1998. Saarel helped lead the men's team to their highest MPSF conference finish in school history.

Also nominated for this week's honors: Derrick White (men's basketball) and Carly Cox (women's Lacrosse)

Derrick White filled the stat sheet in a tough loss against Utah with 31 points, six rebounds, five assists, and four blocks. White recorded his 12th game with at least 20 points and his second game scoring over 30. Nine of his 20-plus games have come during Pac-12 play including four of the last six games. He's the first player to score 30-plus twice in the same season since Askia Booker did so in January 2015 with 30 points at Arizona (Jan. 15) and 43 at USC (Jan. 29)

Junior attacker Carly Cox recorded six points for the No.13 Buffs as they defeated MPSF rival UC Davis 18-5 on Sunday afternoon. Cox scored a career-high four goals, which included a pair of free-position goals. She added a pair of assists which came on the last two goals of the game. She recorded six shots, all of which were on goal. On the defensive end, she recorded one ground ball and one caused turnover. Colorado is now off to a 4-0 start which is the best start in school history.
