Five Student-Athletes Receive Athlete of the Week Honors

March 14, 2017 | Men's Basketball, Track and Field, Lacrosse, Skiing

Move over Fab Five. Outstanding performances from Derrick White (men's basketball), Miranda Stinson (women's lacrosse), David Ketterer (men's ski), Petra Hyncicova (women's ski), and Dani Jones (women's track and field) earn them each a share of this week's athlete of the week.

Derrick White was named to the Pac-12 All-Tournament team after leading the tournament in scoring average. White tallied 26 points, five rebounds along with five assists in the first round win over Washington State. He led Colorado to its best-ever postseason comeback, once trailing the Cougars by 19 points before winning 73-63. In a quarterfinal loss to tournament champion Arizona, White scored 31 points on 9-of-19 shooting and a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. His 31 points are tied for the fourth best in Colorado postseason history and the second-best in a conference tournament. White added six rebounds, five assists and two steals against the Wildcats. Over the two games, Derrick White averaged 28.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.0 apg, 1.5 spg, 1.0 bpg.

Sophomore midfielder Miranda Stinson set a CU record with nine points in a single game as the No. 10 Buffs upset No. 6 Penn State, 16-11, in University Park, Pa., on Sunday afternoon. Stinson recorded five goals and added four assists in the game, accounting for over half of Colorado's score. The five goals tie CU's single-game record, but the nine points broke the former record of eight, which was set by teammate Johnna Fusco on April 4, 2014. Stinson led both teams with 10 shots, eight on net, and was 1-of-3 on free-position shots. The Buffs are now 7-0 this season, which includes a 4-0 record against ranked teams.

David Ketterer swept the men's alpine individual national championships this past weekend, becoming the fifth skier and the third Buffalo of all time to win both the giant slalom and slalom races at the NCAA Championships. He also joined two other Buffaloes as the only trio to win their first two NCAA races, though he is the first alpine skier to accomplish the rarity: Per Kare Jakobsen won a pair as a sophomore in 1988 (men's cross country and relay) and Line Selnes swept her events in 1998 (women's classic and freestyle).  Ketterer is also just the eighth CU skier to have a pair of podium finishes in his first two NCAA races. He became the 13th different Buffalo to win the slalom national championship and the 10th to win a giant slalom title. His win in the giant slalom on the first day of the championships made him the ninth Buffalo to earn a title in his first-ever NCAA Championship race (the sixth in an Alpine race, all giant slaloms).

Petra Hyncicova became the 15th woman to sweep the cross country races at the NCAA Championships. She joins Line Selnes (1998), current assistant Jana Rehemaa Weinberger (2006), and Maria Grevsgaard (2008) as the fourth CU skier to pull off the double.  She is Colorado's seventh freestyle champ overall. Hyncicova claimed her first NCAA title in cruising to an easy win in the women's 5-kilometer classical race. She was the first women's classical national champion since 2011. Her win in the freestyle made her the seventh different Buffalo to win a freestyle national championship, the last being Joanne Reid in 2013.

Sophomore Dani Jones won two national titles this weekend at the 2017 Indoor National Championships in College Station, Texas.  On Friday, Jones anchored the women's DMR relay starting off her leg in 8th place but pushing her way into third until the final 40 meters where she kicked it into gear sprinting to the finish line to pass both Oregon and Stanford to claim the title. This is the first women's indoor DMR title for Colorado. Jones also captured the 3,000 meters National title on Saturday clocking a 9:09.20 time. Jones started off her race steady settling into her pace while also staying within the middle of the pack for most of the race. With about 400 meters left, she started making moves pushing her way into third. As shown from Friday's final leg of the DMR, Jones has a lethal kick to the end of her races and Saturday's 3,000 meters was no different. With about 100 meters left coming around the final turn, Jones kicked it into gear passing up Missouri's Karissa Schweizer to win the title. This is the first time in school history that a CU track athlete has won two National Titles in the same year at the Indoor National Championships.
