The 6-foot-3 transfer nearly averaged a double-double last season
BOULDER - Colorado women's basketball coach JR Payne announced the addition of Janea Bunn, who signed a National Letter of Intent. Bunn will be eligible immediately and will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Â
She is a 6-foot-3 post and is transferring from Midland (Texas) College. The native of Springfield, Massachusetts, is expected to provide immediate help to CU's frontcourt.
Â
"We are thrilled that Janea is a Buff now," Payne said. "She is someone that we have wanted to be a Colorado Buffalo for a long time now. We knew from the beginning that her strengths as a basketball player, combined with her tenacity on the court, would be a huge asset to our program. Janea is a strong and physical player who will be a great asset to our post corps next season. She is a fun, loving personality and will be someone that Buff fans will love to watch and cheer for throughout the next two seasons."
Â
Bunn led the Lady Chaps with 11.7 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.9 blocked shots, starting 25 games as a sophomore in 2016-17. She led Midland to a 17-10 record and averaged 12.6 points and 13.3 rebounds over the final seven games of the season, leading the team to a 5-2 record over that stretch. For the season, she had single-game highs of 23 points, 23 rebounds and seven blocked shots (twice). Bunn also topped 20 points four times and scored in double figures 16 times. She had 10 double-doubles as well and went on to earn first-team all-conference honors.
Â
As a freshman in 2014-15 at Northeast (Neb.) Community College, Bunn averaged 11.7 points, 7.6 rebounds and 5.0 blocked shots in 31 games.
Â
A 2014 graduate of Central High School, she was named first-team all-Western Massachusetts as a junior and as a senior, and participated in the senior all-star game. She didn't start playing basketball until her freshman year of high school.
Â
Colorado finished the 2016-17 with a 17-16 record under Payne, who was in her first season in Boulder. She guided the Buffs to the third round of the WNIT.
