May 26, 2017 | Track and Field

AUSTIN, Texas – University of Colorado freshman runners Madison Boreman and Sage Hurta each earned a trip to the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase here Friday night at the NCAA West Preliminary Round.

WHAT HAPPENED
Boreman, a freshman earned her spot at nationals after finishing third in the first heat of the steeplechase to take one of the three automatic qualifying positions. She clocked in at 10:11.70 to finish fifth overall. Teammate Sage Hurta crossed the finish line in second place in her section with a time of 10:17.67 to automatically qualify.

Action from the track started off with Jaron Thomas in the 110 meters. Thomas ran a strong race finishing second in his heat with a time of 18.86 to automatically qualify for the quarterfinals Saturday evening. Thomas finished 10th overall and will run at 6:20 p.m. on Saturday.

In other action, a couple Buffs' seasons ended as they did not advance in their respected events. Nick Harris's ended his stellar season with a 16th finish in the 800 meters. The Pac-12 Champion crossed the finish line in 1:48.97. In the 400 meter hurdles, Eriana Henderson finished ninth in her section with a time of 1:01.21. On the men's side, Jaron Thomas crossed the finish line in 51.65 to finish eighth in his heat. Thomas did not advance in the 400 meter hurdles but will compete tomorrow in the 110 meter hurdles.

QUOTABLE (Head Coach Mark Wetmore)
"Another pretty good day, starting off with a really good 110 meter hurdles with Jaron advancing tomorrow. I think he ran very close to his fastest sea level time. Good chance to get through tomorrow into the top-12. He was followed by Nick Harris in the 800, who had the misfortune of some people getting tangled up in front of him. He had to run off the track on to the infield and back on again to get around them. He didn't finish high enough to advance. I filed a protest and it was denied. We were told the decision was because he was 8th when he had to run off the track and was in 8th when he came back on the track that he lost no positions and so the protest was denied."

"Jaron came back in the 400 hurdles. He had another pretty good run but not quite enough to advance. Eriana got a second chance in the 400 hurdles as well and ran one of her better times of the year but did not advance. Rajon did well in the high jump, very near her second highest jump of the year and a jump that equaled the height that advanced. She had a few more than some of the others but, she doesn't advance but had a pretty good day."

"Madi Boreman running in the first heat, running really smart getting third as three automatically advance. And Sage finishing second in the third heat to advance. Both freshman steeplechasers on to Eugene."
