Eight Buffs Earn MPSF All-Academic Honors

BOULDER — Colorado placed eight on the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic Teams for the 2017 season. Those athletes are  Olivia Aschman, Sarah Brown, Carly Cox, Kelsie Garrison, Marie Moore, Samantha Nemirov, Molly Rovzar and Paige Soenksen.

To qualify, student-athletes must have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or better, be at least a sophomore academically, have completed at least one full year at their current institution prior to the start of the season, and have competed in at least 50 percent of their team's games.

This is the first MPSF All-Academic team honor for Aschman, Nemirov and Rovzar, while it is the second honor for Brown, Cox and Garrison. Moore and Soenksen have earned the award for the third time.

Ashman, a sophomore defender from Cary, N.C., carries a 3.805 GPA as an integrative physiology and psychology double-major. She started in all 20 of CU's games and recorded 11 ground balls and two draw controls while forcing five caused turnovers.

Brown, a junior defender from Boulder, Colo., has recorded a 3.476 as an advertising major. She started in all 20 games this season and recorded a school record 33 caused turnovers during the season. During the season Brown also recorded three goals, one assist, 39 ground balls and 41 draw controls.

Cox, a junior attacker from Bay Shore, N.Y., is majoring in advertising and has earned a 3.521 GPA. A starter in 19 of 20 games played, she recorded 27 goals and 17 assists for 44 points, which was fifth on the team. She also added 10 ground balls and had four caused turnovers.

Garrison, a junior defender from Westlake Village, Calif., is a broadcast journalism major with a 3.193 GPA. She started in all 19 games played and led CU's defenders with four goals and two assists for six points. She picked up a team-best 43 ground galls, which tied for second on CU's single-season chart. Garrison also recorded 12 draw controls and 22 caused turnovers.

Moore, a senior midfielder from Brick, N.J., finished her career with a 3.489 GPA while majoring in psychology. While starting in all 20 games, she tallied 10 goals and eight assists for 18 points. Moore also added 34 ground balls, 29 draw controls and 14 caused turnovers.

Nemirov, a sophomore midfielder from Setauket, N.Y., is an integrative physiology and psychology double-major with a 3.381 GPA. She saw time in 15 games for the Buffs, recording seven goals in the process. Nemirov also tallied two ground balls and one caused turnover.

Rovzar, a senior defender from Newport Beach, Calif., earned her degree in psychology with a 3.071 GPA. She started in 19 of 20 games played this season. Rovzar recorded 19 ground balls and forced 13 caused turnovers. She also added one draw control.

Soenksen, a senior goalkeeper from Encinitas, Calif., recorded an impressive 3.883 GPA to earn degrees in international affairs and Chinese. She recorded a 15-4 record on the season, allowing 8.46 goals per game. Soenksen made 143 saves during the season for a .491 save percentage. She also recorded 33 ground balls and caused two turnovers.

Colorado finished the 2017 season with a 16-4 record and was second in the MPSF standings with a 7-1 mark. Â The Buffs were ranked 16th in the final IWLCA Division I Coaches Poll.
