Boreman Finishes Second in Steeplechase Final
June 10, 2017 | Track and Field
Eugene, Ore. – The University of Colorado freshman Madie Boreman finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final on day four of the 2017 NCAA Track and Field Championships here Saturday at Hayward Field.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED
Freshman Madie Boreman keeps Colorado's strong steeplechase tradition alive with a second-place finish dropping 3.52 seconds off her already huge PR time from prelims. Boreman right from the start jumped out into the top group and never let up. Boreman held steady in the top pack until the top two separated themselves and Boreman ran alone in the third position. With 200 meters left, she sprinted all out to the finish line crossing second beating out Tori Gerlach of Penn State by .3 seconds. Boreman finished her impressive freshman campaign with a PR time of 9:46.48 moving to fourth on the CU all-time performers list.
Â
Dani Jones kicked off action for the Buffs in the 1,500 meters. In one of the most competitive 1,500 meter races coach Wetmore has seen, Jones finished in fifth place crossing the finish line in 4:14.35. The race started and Jones put herself in a strong position, the pace was slower than usual as the field was full of runners with lethal kicks along with Jones'. The race came down to the last 200 meters as the top-eight places were separated by only one second.
Â
In her second race of the NCAA Championships, Erin Clark earned second team All-America honors in the 5,000 meters. Clark finished in 16th place with a time of 16:04.91. This is her fifth career All-America honor after already adding first-team accolades in the 10,000 meters on Thursday.
Â
Final Women Team Standings
The women finished in 12th place overall with 16 total points. This marks the team's best finish since 2005 when the team finished 12th as well.

QUOTES (Head Coach Mark Wetmore)
"We had a good day. I am happy with how the women did on this final day. Dani had a good run in the 1,500 meters. Just a sophomore finishing fifth, the race was packed up and had a wild last lap, a couple girls ran a 61, and Dani had a 62. But, she was ninth a year ago and fifth this year, she keeps moving up. Great time from two days ago, the 4:10 is the fastest collegiate time in the country. So good day for Dani and a really great year."
Â
"Madie came in on nobody's form chart, had a wonderful trial round two days ago at 9:51, the fastest CU freshman ever. But found another gear today and ran with the leaders, gunned down second place in the last 100 meters or so. 9:46.48, again the fastest freshman at Colorado ever, and points for the team."
Â
"Erin Clark came back after running the 10,000, very few people do that well. And she did it well. Didn't get any points for us, but she did get an All-American honor and ran her fastest time of the year. She was running against a lot of runners with fresher legs. End of the day, the women were 12th, that is a high finish for us. We are really pleased with that."
