CU Women Named Runner Up NCAA Program of the Year

BOULDER – Consistency and unprecedented success were rewarded on Tuesday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as the University of Colorado women were named runner up NCAA Division 1 Program of the Year.

Arkansas men and Oregon women were named NCAA Division I Programs of the year.

The USTFCCCA Program of the Year Award is given annually to the most outstanding cross country and track & field programs in each of the NCAA's three divisions, the NAIA and for each gender in those organizations. The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons) based on finishes at the NCAA or NAIA Championships.

To be eligible for the award, teams must qualify for each of the NCAA or NAIA Championships. Scoring is based on the team's finish at those meets (1st = 1 point, 2nd = 2 points, etc.) and the team with the lowest combined score is crowned champion.

Colorado women finished in second with 22 total points while Arkansas tied for third with 30 points. On the men's side, the team finished in 12th with 85.5 points.

The women's cross country team earned a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships in November to kick start their strong year. For the indoor track season the women finished in seventh, which is their highest indoor finish since 2001 where the team came in sixth overall. The outdoor championships just closed out here Saturday as the women finished in 12th place to give them a second overall finish in the program of the year rankings. Â

For the men the team finished sixth in cross country and went on to add a 16th finish in indoor and 59th for outdoor to earn their 12th overall program finish.
