Buffs will host both the RMISA and NCAA Championships next winter
SALT LAKE CITY — The Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association (RMISA) announced the 2018 skiing schedule, highlighted by Colorado hosting the RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championship in addition to the previously announced NCAA Championships in Steamboat Springs.
Â
Although it hasn't been long since CU last hosted the NCAA Championships, also doing so at Steamboat in 2016, you have to go back to 2010 to find the last time CU hosted the RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championships. Coincidentally, that same year Colorado also played host to the NCAA Championships at the same venue it will this winter.
Â
Back in that 2010 season, the Buffs won the RMISA/NCAA West Regional meet and finished as runner-up to Denver at the NCAA Championships.
Â
Other highlights on the 2018 schedule include the Nordic teams kicking the season off Jan. 2-4 in Kincaid, Alaska with two freestyle races (10/15K plus a sprint race) being held in conjunction with the U.S. Cross Country Nationals, a return to the state of New Mexico and the Denver Invite being held at Loveland Ski Area (alpine) and Maloit Park in Minturn, Colo. (Nordic).
Â
Thus, CU fans will have three in-state opportunities to catch the Buffs in action plus two others in neighboring states (New Mexico Invite and Utah Invite).
Â
Colorado is set to return six skiers who earned a combined 11 All-America honors last season, highlighted by Petra Hyncicova and David Ketterer sweeping the NCAA individual titles in their respective disciplines. Their victories gave CU 94 individual NCAA titles, topping Denver (88), Utah (74) and Vermont (64) for the most in NCAA history.
Â
The Buffs last season won the RMSIA Championship, its 28th in program history, which it was one of three meets CU took first place in. CU finished second at the 2017 NCAA Championships, its seventh time as runner-up, with eight titles, in 27 seasons under head coach Richard Rokos. Colorado's last national championship came in 2015 at Lake Placid.Â
