Buffs Draw With Colorado State To Open Season

August 18, 2017 | Soccer

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - 25th-ranked Colorado opened the 2017 season with a 0-0 draw at Colorado State on Friday at CSU Soccer Field in Fort Collins.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Buffs outshot CSU 20-8, including 10 shots on goal, but could not put a shot in the net.

Megan Massey had one of the best shots of the game in the second minute, but her blast from the top of the box was right at the goalkeeper.

Libby Geraghty had two near scores in the game. She hit a shot from point-blank range in the seventh minute that was deflected over the bar by the keeper. In the 81st minute, she hit the crossbar after her shot was tipped by the keeper following a great turn at the top of the box and a run in towards the goal.

KEY STATISTICS: Jalen Tompkins started in goal and made one save in the first half. Scout Watson came on for the remainder of the contest and had two saves. Taylor Kornieck had a game-high five shot attempts, including two on goal.

NOTES: CU is now 11-5-6 all-time in season openers ... the Buffs dropped to 2-0-2 all-time against CSU with both ties coming in Fort Collins ... it was the 11th shutout all-time for the Buffs in a season opener ... it was the first match ever at CSU's new soccer field.

UP NEXT: CU hosts Colorado College at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday at Prentup Field.

POSTGAME QUOTES:

Danny Sanchez, head coach:

On the game
"I thought CSU played very well. We knew it was going to be a battle and we needed a goal. I thought we defended ok with the exception of the one good opportunity they had. I never felt like they had sustained pressure against us. We just weren't good enough in the final third [of the field]. We were impatient. All first games are tough, but we just weren't good enough or patient enough in the final third to get one. I think if we get one, the game opens up and I think we're in good shape, but we were scrambling the whole game.

On the play of the newcomers
"For their first game, I thought the new players did well. Hannah [Cardenas] did well in the back. Libby, until she got hurt, was very dangerous, maybe unlucky, and had our best chances of the game. Marty [Puketapu] came in and had a couple chances, maybe could have done a little bit better, I think she would say that, but it's good to get a game under her belt. Hannah [Scheid] got in for the first time so it was good to get her going for a little bit."

On Colorado College coming to Boulder on Sunday
"It's going to be another in-state rival. I don't know what their result was tonight, but they had a hard game against Northern Colorado and they're going to come in and bring the same energy as CSU did today. Hopefully we'll have a big crowd at home with a lot of energy and we have to bounce back. Like I told the team, it's the first of 20 games. Obviously we want to win every game, but there's going to be games where maybe we get outplayed a little bit and we get a result. I felt maybe today we were a little unfortunate not to get a result, but once again, a lot of credit to CSU. I thought they defended very well and really limited our clear opportunities.
