September 12, 2017 | Women's Golf
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – With three Buffs finishing in the top-20, The University of Colorado women's golf team tied for third place in a very competitive field at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational here Tuesday.
Sophomores Robyn Choi and Kirsty Hodgkins and senior Brittany Fan all finished within three shots of each other. Choi led the way, carding a 2-under par 70-71-73—214 scorecard to finish tied for fifth. Hodgkins finished only one stroke back with a three-round total of 1-under par 215 (73-71-71) and tied for 10th while Brittany Fan tied for 16th place at 74-71-72--217 or 1-over par.
"We gave it a good run but couldn't quite pull off the win," head coach Anne Kelly said. "But, the team played really well I'm proud of them. It was quite a good field. Northwestern was the NCAA runner up, Stanford was the 2015 National Champion and the runner up in 2016."
Oklahoma State won the event with the only score under par at 1-under 863 and 2017 NCAA runner-up Northwestern took second place with a 1-over 865. The Buffs tied for third place with the 2015 NCAA Champions Stanford Cardinal at 5-over 869.
Robyn Choi closed out the tournament with a 1-over par 73 on the final day to place fifth overall. She teed off from No. 1 on Tuesday firing out seven straight pars and a bogey to open the front nine at 1-over. Although she bogeyed hole No. 10 to start her back nine she bounced right back and birdied hole No. 12 to finish at 1-over par. Choi finished the tournament first in par-4 scoring (-3) and second amongst the field with 44 pars.
Kirsty Hodgkins recorded the team best round carding a 1-under par 71 on the day to end with a 1-under 215 scorecard. Hodgkins led the entire field with 45 total pars while teammate Robyn Choi came in right behind her with 44. She started on hole No.1 and enjoyed a fast start, moving to 2-under par through the front nine. Hodgkins had a bogey on hole No. 15 just as most of her teammates but stayed consistent to finish at 1-under par.
Brittany Fan with an up and down back nine fired out one of the only eagles on the day and finished at even par 72 to give her a final scorecard of 74-71-72—217 to tie for 16th overall. Fan began her day strong only recording one bogey on the front nine. She went on and doubled the par-4 hole No. 12 but then bounced back immediately to fire out an eagle on hole 13 and a birdie on 14.
"It was a colorful back nine," Brittany Fan said. "I took a double on one hole due to trouble out of the thick rough, but I bounced back with an eagle from the fairway on the next hole. I had a lot of good runs for birdie, but they just didn't drop. I'll get them though."
Gillian Vance's round was up and down as she finished the final 18 holes at 9-over par. She bogeyed her first hole and then played even through the next hole. Back to back bogeys and a double on hole No. 6 pushed her to 5-over on the front nine. Vance went on to record five pars and four bogeys but finished her day with a birdie on hole no. 1. Vance finished tied for 69th place.
Freshman Alisha Lau recorded her third straight round of 76 to finish 12-over par 228 for the tournament. Her day started with a bogey on hole No. 3 but settled down to record five straight pars. She finished with a two birdies 10 pars and six bogeys to finish 4-over on the day. Lau placed 69th overall with teammate Vance.
Playing as an individual Jaclyn Murray bounced back with her best round of the tournament as she finished at 5-over par 77 to give her a final scorecard of 81-82-77—240. She finished 93rd overall and tallied a total of 31 pars.
Colorado returns to the links on September 26 for the Gonzaga Coeur D'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational in Idaho, hosted by Gonzaga.
"I think the team played really well and I think it is a great way to start off the year," Kelly said. "But, certainly a little bit of a disappointment that we could not pull off the win. I saw a lot of good stuff and the tournament certainly pointed out the areas that we need to work on for the next one."
