September 04, 2017 | Soccer
Buffs break all-time shutout streak record in 3-0 victory
BOULDER - Tatum Barton scored twice as No. 21 Colorado defeated BYU 3-0 on Monday at Prentup Field. The Buffs are now 4-0-2 on the season, while BYU dropped to 0-3-2 after being ranked No. 8 in the preseason top 25.
Â
CU broke the school shutouts records on Monday, extending its streak to 607:58 for minutes and six for consecutive matches. The previous records of 551:54 and five matches were both set in 2013.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: Barton set up the first goal of the match in the 23rd minute, heading a cross from Megan Massey to Taylor Kornieck in the center of the box. Kornieck her shot to the low-left corner of the net for an early 1-0 lead.
Â
Barton pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute with her first career score. Kornieck sent a cross in from the left corner and Barton deflected it in right in front of the net with her right foot.
Â
Barton scored again in the 83rd minute after Becca Rasmussen pushed a pass ahead of the Cougars defense. Barton's shot from inside the top of the box, straight out from the right post, found the upper-right corner of the net.
Â
KEY STATISTICS: Jalen Tompkins made a season-high four saves, including a one-handed diving save in the first half. It was her third solo shutout this season and 10th of her career.
Â
NOTES: The current shutout streak of 607:58 broke the previous school record of 551:54 (set in 2013) and the sixth consecutive shutout broke the previous record of five, also from 2013 ... first-ever win over BYU during the regular season (two previous wins were in the NCAA Tournament) ... first two goals of Barton's career ... Barton had five points (two goals, one assist), marking the 10th time in CU history a player has had at least five points in a match ... the three goals were the most CU has scored against BYU in the eighth all-time meeting between the two schools ... Kornieck's goal was her third game-winner this season and ninth of her career, moving her into a tie for fifth place all time at CU.

UP NEXT: Colorado hits the road to play at Texas on Friday and at UTSA on Sunday.
Â
POSTGAME QUOTES:
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On three-goal outing after being held scoreless on Saturday…
"We knew that the game would be more open and we would have more room to operate. As frustrating as Saturday was, today we knew that although we'd be under more pressure defensively, we would have more opportunities and more room to operate because BYU presses so much and they play high up the field. The game kind of played out like we thought it would tactically, fortunately for us we were very efficient in the final third and obviously solid defensively."
Â
On Tatum Barton's two-goal performance…
"I think at the end of the day it's going to be by committee. It was Marty [Puketapu]'s turn last Sunday, it was Tatum's turn today and she played very well but that competition is going to continue throughout the year. Obviously we're very pleased with her, she was a little unlucky early in the season, she was really unlucky last season at Texas Tech not to build off that. Strikers and attacking players are judged on their production. Obviously she was very productive today and we needed her and it was a good win for the Buffs."
Â
On Tatum Barton getting more comfortable after joining team late…
"I think so. She's also a local product out of Columbine High School, so she knows a lot of the players and is comfortable with her surroundings, her family is here so I don't think there's as big of an adjustment as for someone that's not from this area. Having said, she looked very comfortable today linking up with all of our players."
Â
On breaking record with sixth consecutive shutout…
"I'm not one of those guys that's superstitious about that stuff, I don't care. We go into matches knowing we have to be good in the back and I thought that the back four, plus Courtney [Fedor] when she came in, were rock solid. The first 15 minutes were a little sketchy, after that we defended great, we blocked shots, obviously JJ [Tompkins] dealt with the stuff she needed to, but really she didn't have to deal with a lot. I thought Alex Vidger in front of the back four was very good. Really it was an 11-person commitment to defending. It started up top, through the midfield. (BYU) is a very dangerous team that hasn't been clicking, but they're going to bust out and score a lot of goals here soon, we're just glad it wasn't today. Sometimes you play great defense and one just kind of nicks in, then sometimes you're very average defensively and they hit the bar three times. Really what we're looking at is our communication, our shape, and how many clear cut opportunities we're giving up and there hasn't been a lot so far."
Â
On first road trip of the season outside the state…
"It's a quick turnaround. We're off tomorrow, we'll do a little recovery obviously, we train Wednesday, then we're off Thursday morning to Austin. Texas is 5-0 so this is a huge opportunity for us. We look at it as an opportunity to go on the road against a very good Big-12 team that's taken care of everybody in front of them and hopefully get a big win on the road. It'll be a quick recovery. The team will stay focused, I think when you get on the road sometimes you're even more focused because it really is just the team. I expect us to come out Friday with a good performance."
Â
On playing with more energy than Saturday…
"You can spin these games however you want but they know when it's a big game. When you play a good team and they put you on your heels a little bit, it forces you to focus. This is an NCAA tournament team, and we needed to get a result against a very good team. We know they're a very good team that's going to get a lot of good results, I would not be shocked at all if (BYU) wins the West Coast Conference, which is one of the top conferences in the country. I think the focus, the intensity, the attention to detail was very good for 90 minutes. I want to give a shoutout to the palyers that came off the bench because I felt like there was no drop off. I was looking over and we had starters on the bench that we were able to rest for long stretches in the second half because the players that came in were creating chances and staying to the tactical plan. It was good to get through that push, and it was good to get that third goal to seal the game."
Â
On play of the midfield…
"I thought they played very well. Taylor bopped in and out of there, Becca did some good work in there, Sara and Megan were asked to do a lot defensively so we knew they wouldn't do a lot attacking, but they did what we needed defensively. Obviously Alex Vidger was rock solid and when Cassie Phillips came in she did very well, I though Hannah Scheid gave us some really good minutes in the second half as well. It was truly a team effort from that side of things, they had to give up a little bit on the attack and knew they had to defend for long stretches and they stuck to the plan."

Tatum Barton, sophomore, forward
On if the performance today is what she was hoping to bring to the team since transferring from Texas Tech...
Â
"I've been waiting to score my first goals here so I'm really happy that I got to do that today and help the team get the win."
Â
On when she found out she would get the start...
"I had a thought yesterday but I didn't know for sure. But I found out today."
Â
On the nervousness and feelings coming into the game as a starter...
"I always have those feelings, whether I'm starting or not. I'm always ready to play."
Â
On joining the team late and if today's performance is a sign of her comfortability with the team...
"As a forward, it takes time to learn to play with your other forwards. The more we play together, the more we're playing well together. And that helps us on the offensive end."
Â
On this week'today's offensive performance versus the tie against CSUN...
"It's really big for us. It's a confidence booster. We really needed it coming off of a tie, we shouldn't have tied."
