Buffs Embark On First Pac-12 Road Trip Of The Season
January 04, 2018 | Women's Basketball
BOULDER – Colorado's women's basketball team will head to Washington this weekend for its first Pac-12 road trip of the season. The Buffs enter the weekend 10-3 overall and 1-1 in the Pac-12.
Friday's game at Washington State will tip off at 9 p.m. MT and will be televised on Pac-12 Mountain and Pac-12 Washington. Ann Schatz and Elise Woodward will have the call on the networks.
Sunday's game at Washington tips off at 3 p.m. MT. Both games this weekend will be broadcast in the Denver area on the radio on 630 KHOW with Cory Lopez and Carol Callan calling the action.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Wazzu is 7-7 overall, but dropped its first two conference games last weekend on the road at No. 10 Oregon and No. 17 Oregon State. The Cougars are coming off an injury-riddled season that saw them reach the semifinals of the WNIT in 2017. Healthy this season, they got off to a rough by dropping four of their first five games, but finished non-conference play strong.
Borislava Hristova, a 6-foot redshirt sophomore from Bulgaria, was one of those star players who missed much of last season due to injury. She leads WSU in scoring at 16.9 points per game. However, she missed the first two Pac-12 games this season.
Behind her is Alexys Swedlund, a 5-11 junior, who averages 10.2 points. She had 13 points on New Year's Eve in a 71-53 loss to Oregon State.
Louise Brown is third in scoring at 8.2 points per game and leads the team with a 7.1 rebounding average. The 6-3 junior missed much of last season with a foot injury.
Chanelle Molina, a 5-9 sophomore, was another player lost to injury last season. She played well enough prior to her injury to still be named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team in 2017, averaging 12.8 points in 17 games. She started this season slowly, but picked it up recently, dropping 17 on 7-of-10 shooting at Oregon State on Sunday.
Nike McClure, a 6-3 junior, has come off the bench in all 14 games and averages 5.2 points and 4.9 rebounds. However, CU fans remember her from last season as she broke WSU's school record with 12 blocks vs. the Buffs in February. She averages 2.0 blocks this season.
Wazzu has struggled on the defensive end this season, allowing 70.6 points per game and has been outrebounded by 2.5 boards per game. Prior to Pac-12 play last weekend, the Cougars took a two-game winning streak into conference play, winning road games at Boise State and Nebraska.
Washington is 6-7 overall this season and also 0-2 in Pac-12 play. The Huskies are a much different team this season after graduating national player of the year Kelsey Plum and All-American Chantel Osahor.
Despite the losses and being picked last in the Pac-12 this season, UW has been more than competitive this season, holding close with both Oregon and Oregon State last weekend and going 6-5 in non-conference play.
Amber Melgoza, a 5-10 sophomore, leads UW at 16.8 points per game and has hit 80.9 percent at the free throw line. She opened Pac-12 play on fire, dropping 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting at Oregon and 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting at OSU.
Mai-Loni Henson, a 6-1 sophomore, is the team's top scoring threat in the post, averaging 11.4 points and 5.0 rebounds.
Fapou Semebene, a 6-1 freshman, leads the team in a rebounding at 5.2 and averages 3.5 points.
