2017: Indoor: In his first indoor season, Merkel competed in the 400-meters and 800-meters. He recorded a personal best time of 49.55 in the 400 at the Air Force Invitational (1/21). At the Pott’s Invitational (1/14) Merkel placed sixth in the 800 and clocked a time of 1:56.39.
Outdoor: Merkel had a successful 2016-17 outdoor season in the 400-meter and 800-meter events. During his freshman season, Merkel was one of the top performers for the Buffs in the 800-meters with a PR of 1.53.30 set at the Bryan Clay Invitational (4/14).

HIGH SCHOOL: Merkel was a member of the AHS team that won the 2016 Centennial League Championship. His main focus was the 400-meter dash. Merkel earned his high school personal best (49.50) at the prelims at the state championships where he placed eighth. Merkel ended up ninth in the finals. He also ran the 800 at the state meet, finishing fifth with another PR of 1:57.14. As a senior, he was also a member of the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays. Merkel was a first team academic all-state honoree as a senior and was a member of the honor roll all through high school.  
 
HIGH SCHOOL BESTS: 400-meters: 49.5; 800-meters: 1:59.04.
 
IN THE CLASSROOM: Merkel intends to major in finance.         
 
PERSONAL: David Andrew Merkel was born on Sept. 14, 1997. He is the son of Shawn and Laura Merkel and has one sister, Melissa. His mother played tennis at Utah. He enjoys soccer, hiking and learning new languages.
