Evans Scores In Second Half, But Buffs Settle For 1-1 Draw

November 04, 2016 | Soccer

BOULDER - Danica Evans scored 10 minutes into the second half, but No. 22 Colorado settled for a 1-1 draw with No. 23 Utah on Friday at Prentup Field. CU finished the regular season with a 14-5-1 record, including 8-2-1 in the Pac-12. The Buffaloes are currently tied with Southern California for second place, but the Trojans play their final match of the season tonight at 8 p.m.

Utah is now 11-3-5 and 6-1-4 in the Pac-12, finishing fourth.

WHAT HAPPENED: CU outshot Utah 15-2 in the first half, but came up with just three shots on goal.

In the  55th minute, Megan Massey sent a ball into the box to Sarah Kinzner, who tried to flick the ball over the Utah goalkeeper, but her shot landed on top of the net.

The Buffs finally put one on the board in the 63rd minute. Joss Orejel sent Evans into the box and Evans made one touch past a defender and fired the shot between the goalkeeper and the near, left post.

Utah tied it up 1-1 in the 79th minute as the Pac-12's leading scorer Hailey Skolmoski pushed one past Jalen Tompkins.

Moments after Utah hit the crossbar in the first overtime period with a free kick, Emily Bruder had a sure-goal denied with a diving, one-handed save in the 100th minute.

CU had a throw-in with 10 seconds left in the second overtime period and the ball bounced towards the net, but was cleared away from the goal as time expired.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Tompkins made six saves in the match--all after halftime. CU outshot the Utes 30-13, led by a career-high eight shot attempts by Taylor Kornieck.

UP NEXT: CU will find out its opponent for the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Monday. The NCAA Selection Show will be streamed live on NCAA.com at 2:30 p.m.

NOTES: Kahlia Hogg made her first appearance since Oct. 6 against Oregon after missing six matches with a knee injury ... it was CU's first tie of the season ... CU is now 7-3-2 all-time against Utah.

POSTMATCH QUOTES

Danny Sanchez, head coach

General
"First of all, Utah is a very good team. Their RPI is 20 for a reason, so as you look at it they're going to have some possession. I felt that for the first half we played very well, maybe unlucky not to get a goal, but (we) played with great energy and great fight. Big picture what I told the team is, last year when we played Utah we went out with a whimper, this year we went out with the ball bouncing in the six with two seconds to go. Two very good teams, tournament quality game, it just didn't go our way, but big picture I'm pleased with how we played."

On Play of Danica Evans
"She's playing with great confidence, her movement is great, her work rate is excellent, she's creating and she's scoring goals. She's in great form and we'll need her next weekend."

On NCAA Tournament
"The selection show is on Monday. When you really look at what we've done and our body of work, and our results, especially in the last five games. Everybody wanted to see what we'd do in these last five games, two wins and a draw against basically all top 20, top 25 RPI teams. We're pleased with what we've done. Whatever happens, happens, and we'll be ready to play next weekend."

On Current Form
"Great. Great spirit, great fight, playing with confidence, moving people into different spots and adjusting. It was great to get Kahlia back out there on the field today to gain some confidence, with another week of recovery treatment she should be ready to go next weekend. I'm pleased with where we're at."

Danica Evans, senior, forward

General
"We have confidence right now and we just played a good game, despite the result. In the end we played a good game and we worked hard together. I can't wait to see what the tournament holds for us."

On Significance of NCAA Tournament
"It's all I've wished for. I haven't been here since my freshman year, and I'm happy that our team has made it this far, and I'm very excited."

On Reaching 10-Goal Mark
"This is the most goals I've scored in any season I've had in college so far, so all the credit to the team and (the coaches) Danny, Jason, and Dave. We work on finishing every day so it's just staying focused and putting it away when it matters."

On Battling to the End
"All season long our motto has been 'stronger together' and if we work to the 110th minute in games, it just shows we're willing to do the work for each other. Our team has a lot left to go, so we're ready for the tournament."
