Buff Golfers Finish Fourth In Stroke Play At UCLA's Gifford Collegiate

CU to face Northwestern in first round of match play
NAPA, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team finished fourth here Monday in the stroke play portion of UCLA's Gifford Collegiate, and will begin match play Tuesday against Northwestern.
No. 14-ranked Southern California rolled to the team win in the 36-hole event, posting a 38-under score of 682, easily outdistancing No. 6 Stanford (21-under 699). Host UCLA rallied late to snatch third place with a 14-under 706, with the Buffaloes finishing in the upper bracket in fourth at 112-under 708.
The format now shifts into a match play format, and by virtue of the stroke play standings, Colorado drew Northwestern in the first round. The winner will play the winner of the USC-Wisconsin match, while the loser goes into consolation play against the loser of that contest. If there is a tie, it will be decided by which team won the most holes, and if still tied, which team had the top winner among the six individual matches.
Junior John Souza and freshman Morten Toft Hansen led the Colorado attack on Monday, as both tied for sixth individually with 6-under par 138 scores on the 7,171-yard, par-72 Silverado North Course, which hosts the PGA Tour's Safeway Open.
Souza turned in a 72-66—138, the afternoon 6-under score tying for the best in the 51-man field. He was under par on all three hole designations (1-under on the par-3s, 3-under on the par-4s and 2-under on the par-5s), with his 10 birdies overall tied for fourth in the field.
Hansen carded a 71-67—138, his afternoon round highlighted by two eagles, the only player to score more than one with just seven scored overall. That led to him playing the par-5 holes at 6-under, second best in the field.
Junior Yannik Paul fashioned a pair of 70s for a 140 total (4-under), which placed him 13th. He had the fewest holes worse than par by a Buff – three – and had a steady day overall with seven birdies and 26 pars against those three bogeys.
Senior Jeremy Paul fired a 71-73—144 even par effort, with eight birdies and 23 pars helping him to a 24th place finish; he played fairly solid but ran into trouble on one hole – scoring a quadruple 8 on the par-4 10th hole in the second round after he made the turn at 1-under.
Junior Spencer Painton tied for 38th with a 75-74—149 performance (5-over), scoring three birdies and 25 pars for his rounds. He played the front nines at 6-over but the back nines at 1-under.
Senior Ethan Freeman struggled a bit in the first round but rallied in the second in recording a 78-73—151 (7-over) which placed him 43rd. He was 4-over par after just seven holes but played the remaining 29 holes at just 3-over in scoring four birdies and 22 pars for his day.
"We knew coming in that 36 holes today was going to make for a long day, and I thought we did a good job overall and as a result we're in good position heading into match play," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "John and Morten had really good afternoon rounds, Yannik had a solid day and Jeremy had just one bad hole. Ethan was a little off in the first round and finished strong and Spencer kept it close to par."
Colorado had not played in nearly a month, but Edwards didn't see any adverse effects from the layoff.
"That wasn't an issue at all. We had some good intrasquad competitions so we were pretty fresh. I didn't really see any rust, the guys were pretty much in their grooves at the start. And the conditions couldn't have been more perfect, it was 70 degrees, we had maybe 10 minutes where the wind was all of 1 mile per hour, and the win the course was set up fair. Everyone had a lot of fun playing the course."
USC's Rico Hoey turned in a 65-67—132 (12-under) scorecard to claim medalist honors over teammate Jonah Texeira, who carded a pair of 67s for a 10-under 134.
The Colorado-Northwestern match will begin at 8 a.m. MST, with the afternoon matches to start around 1:30 p.m., depending on the length of morning play.
"It's always a little different when you are playing head to head in individual matches," Edwards added. "We're playing more golf at a tournament then we normally would, five rounds instead of three, and on a PGA course. So this is a great experience for the guys."
