Golfers Earn Split In First Day Of Matches At UCLA's Gifford Collegiate

Buffs Will Play For Fifth Place Wednesday
NAPA, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team earned a split in their two matches on the first of two days of match play competition here Tuesday in UCLA's Gifford Collegiate.
Unfortunately, the loss came in the first match against No. 36 Northwestern, which rallied to edge the No. 24 Buffaloes, 3-2 with one match ending all square. The Buffs did rally to handily defeat Wisconsin in the consolation bracket semifinal, 4-1, with a match ending in a tie.
The Buffaloes had finished fourth in the stroke play portion of the event Monday on the 7,171-yard, par-72 Silverado North Course, which hosts the PGA Tour's Safeway Open. Colorado will now play either UCLA or South Florida for fifth place; UCLA held a 3-2 edge in completed matches when play was suspended due to darkness, with the last match having two holes to play with the Bruin golfer up by one hole.
Senior Jeremy Paul and freshman Morten Toft Hansen won both their matches Tuesday; no Buffalo lost both.
In other first round matches in the championship bracket, No. 14 Southern California defeated Wisconsin 5-0-1, No. 6 Stanford beat South Florida, 3-2-1 and No. 49 Washington beat UCLA, 4-1-1.
USC then defeated Northwestern, 4-2, in the championship semifinals, with Stanford leading Washington, 3-1, when play was suspended; the Cardinal were ahead in the two remaining matches. The winner will face USC in the championship final Wednesday morning.
"This morning was a tough loss -- we really battled but just didn't play very well," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We essentially lost by one hole as we would have won the tiebreaker. Northwestern is a good team but it was still disappointing.
"But I was very proud of the way the team bounced back emotionally after a draining loss as we had to go right out and play a solid Wisconsin unit. It was a much better feeling after the afternoon round than this morning. We will play one of either two very good teams tomorrow in UCLA or South Florida."
The Buffs will begin play in the final round at 9:57 a.m. MST, as the 18 holes will then bring to an end a very successful fall season for the CU program.
