Golfers Close Out Fall Season With Match Play Win Over UCLA

Paul Birdies Final Hole to Cement 4-2 Win For CU

NAPA, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team closed out its fall season here Wednesday by defeating host UCLA, 4-2, in the consolation bracket final in the Bruins' Gifford Collegiate.

The match came down to the very last hole; with CU leading 3-2, senior Jeremy Paul was all square with UCLA's Hidetoshi Yoshihara heading to the 571-yard, par-5 9th hole.  Paul scored a birdie from about four feet out while Yoshihara made par giving the Buffs the overall win.

Senior Ethan Freeman and juniors Spencer Painton and John Souza all won their matches, and all doing so in convincing fashion.

"Today was a really good win, obviously with UCLA being one of the premier programs in our conference is something we're very excited about," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "It was a good effort by the guys to close out the fall."

CU lost in the first round of match play to Northwestern, 3½-2½, but rallied to defeat Wisconsin, 4½-1½ in the consolation bracket semifinals, thus winning two of three match play contests on the 7,171-yard, par-72 Silverado North Course.

Southern California won the match play team title to go with its stroke play crown earlier in the week.  Despite a 3-3 tie with Stanford, USC won the tiebreaker on the strength of most holes won (7-6).  Northwestern and Washington tied for third, followed by the Buffs, then UCLA in sixth, Wisconsin seventh and South Florida eighth.

"We're really pleased with the fall season as a whole, there's certainly a lot for room to improve, but the team really developed throughout the fall," Edwards said.  "Everyone improved individually as well and I'm really excited about the direction of the team.  One of our biggest strength is our depth, John and Spencer have been trading in and out of the fifth and sixth spots all year, and that's the reason we won today.  They've had quality experience and both played well against a really good team.  That shows our depth, and we've got some really good guys behind them, too."

NOTES: The Buffaloes had finished fourth in the 36-hole stroke play portion of the event Monday on the Silverado course, which also hosts the PGA Tour's Safeway Open ... Colorado played in five major tournaments in the fall, finishing first, second, third, fourth and fifth ... Yannik Paul finished as the team leader in stroke average for the fall with a 71.0 figure, which tied for the third lowest in school history; Freeman was next at 71.75 followed by Jeremy Paul (72.31); Hansen was the top freshman with a 72.94 average, the fifth-best by a frosh for a fall season.
