Buffs Open Season 2-0 With Victory Over CSU At Home
August 21, 2016 | Soccer
BOULDER - Freshman Taylor Kornieck scored less than seven minutes in and Danica Evans scored another goal in the second half to propel Colorado to a 2-1 win over Colorado State on Sunday at Prentup Field in the second round of the Colorado Cup.
Â
The Buffaloes improved to 2-0 on the season for the sixth time in the 21st season of CU soccer. However, it's the third time in head coach Danny Sanchez's fifth year the team has opened with two victories.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED: It was all CU for much of the first half as the Buffs outshot the Rams 14-4 in the first half. Kornieck broke through early at 6:42 for her first career goal. Sarah Kinzner set her up with a through ball from midfield and Kornieck was in for a breakaway along the left side of the box for the goal, pushing the ball to the far post past the goalkeeper.
Â
Despite the early dominance, CSU broke through at 26:22 after three consecutive corner kicks. The third corner was deflected out to the center of the box and Amy Eckert had a wide open shot for the goal.
Â
The Buffaloes had multiple scoring opportunities left on the field in the half. CU had two shots hit the frame, another cleared off the goal line for a CSU defender, and a two others that missed inches over the crossbar.
Â
CU came out more settled in the second half and outshot CSU 15-1. Camilla Shymka was robbed of a goal in the 56th minute. After beating the goalkeeper, she shot on goal, but a CSU defender was there to clear the ball away.
Â
Evans scored the game-winning goal at 66:15. Stephanie Zuniga set her up one-on-one in the center of the box and Evans spun around a defender for an open shot with her left foot.
Â
Jalen Tompkins had a key save in the 84th minute, diving to her left to keep the Buffs ahead.
Â
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES: Tompkins has now played the first 90 minutes of her career without allowing a goal, making two saves during that stretch. She played the first 45 minutes of Friday's season opener at Air Force and the last 45 on Sunday.
Â
Shymka had an outstanding performance with seven shot attempts, including five on goal. She was stopped on breakaways three times and another time she beat the goalkeeper, but her shot was cleared off the goal line by a defender.
Â
The team's back line of Joss Orejel, Alex Vidger, Kahlia Hogg, Erin Greening and reserve Courtney Fedor was also key in the team allowing just five shot attempts.
Â
UP NEXT: CU will hit the road to renew two old Big 12 rivalries next weekend. The Buffs will play at Kansas on Friday and Missouri on Sunday. Both matches will begin at 6 p.m. MT.
Â
NOTES: Kornieck's goal was the first of her career … Zuniga now has two assists in two games in just 45 minutes of action on the field … only twice last season did CU hold an opponent to five or fewer shots, but the team has now done it in the first two games of the season … Colorado's 29 shot attempts were the most since attempting 30 in a 4-1 win over Tennessee-Martin in 2013 … it is the fourth consecutive season a freshman has scored in the home opener as Kornieck joins Greening (2015), Brittney Stark (2014) and Brie Hooks (2013) … the goal CU allowed in the first half was the first goal allowed in a home opener in 754 minutes and 19 seconds (the last goal allowed in a home opener was in 2008 against Florida).

Postgame Quotes
Danny Sanchez, head coach
On effort from team so far
"We have to look at where we are in the beginning of the season. It's our second. Game we had a tough game on Friday night in tough conditions. I'm pleased with how we came out. I'm really pleased with the amount of chances we created. Obviously you always want to score more goals, but we scored two goals and we only gave up one shot in the second half. I thought our back four played really tight. Colorado State really spaces you out and moves the ball well. We are going to have to chase for a little bit. We didn't do well enough in the final third (of the field) but we did just enough."
Â
On Jalen Tompkins's big save late in the game
"She was in the right position. Kahlia kept the play wide, she cut the goal in half for JJ and she made the save she needed to make. Whenever you play a game over 90 minutes you're going to give up some chances and that was the one chance we gave up in the second half and she handled it well."
Â
On Taylor Kornieck scoring her first goal
"It's great for her especially in her first of many games at Prentup Field so we are really pleased with her. It was a quality finish, we had two good chances before that maybe we could have taken care of. Her composure in the slot at far post was great and it got us going in the right direction."
Â
On Danica Evans
"She puts a lot of pressure on herself, especially in the first half when she had a couple chances she could have done better with. But it was a great win by Stephanie to get the ball to her, it was a great turn in the box and no keeper is going to save it at that distance. We are really pleased with her getting on the score sheet and hopefully there is more to come this season."
Â
On the first two games
"Where we are at in Division I women's soccer there is so much parity that every result is a big result. We don't look past anybody and we don't over celebrate or under celebrate anyone. We aren't there as a program. We wanted to start this weekend 2-0, we wanted to control our own destiny in the Colorado Cup and we do now. We play Denver September 17th, but more importantly, we will go on the road this weekend against two tough teams, under the lights and big crowds. We are real interested to see how we will respond."
Â
On play of freshman and transfers
"Taylor (Kornieck) did very well so we are pleased with that. I think Camilla (Shymka) showed some really nice things as well. Obviously the transfers, Emily worked hard and she was lucky enough to get one today. Megan (Massey) in the midfield had a good shift so I'm pleased with that but as the season goes on, we are going to need these other players as well as we sub more, travel and get a knock or two, so we are pleased with what the newcomers are doing right now."
Â
Danica Evans, Sr., F
On game-winning goal
"I just saw Stephanie (Zuniga), and Steph is really good at crossing and she's good at chopping it back, so I knew that if I got to the penalty kick spot that she would find me. I saw the two girls and turned and saw a wide open goal and shot it."
Â
On scoring her first goal of the season
"It felt great to score and get that winning goal and get my team up by a goal, and let us breathe a little bit at the end."
Â
On the start of the season for CU
"I think that our team is going to be great this year. We've got two tough games coming up on the road and our season really starts when we get to our first stop, Kansas."
Â
On the team scoring more than last year's team
"It's good for us to see different people scoring our goals every time so far this season. And if everyone contributes then we should be great."
Â
Taylor Kornieck, Fr., M/F
On scoring her first collegiate goal
"It felt great to get my first career goal and it really meant a lot to me."
Â
On playing with patience
"I tend to hold back until I find the right shot, because once you find the right shot you've got to put it away."
Â
On adjusting to the college game
"I feel great, myself, Sarah (Kinzner), and Morgan (Stanton) we all work really great in the midfield together. And I've already gotten chemistry with the forwards so it's just really good."
Â
On what the team needs to do to prepare for the road trip
"I think we need to concentrate on putting our shots away. I feel as though we had a ton of good chances today and we need to put them away."
