Top 20 Soccer Moments: No. 19
August 29, 2016 | Soccer
BOULDER - 2003 was a historic year in CU's soccer history; it was a year of firsts. First regular season Big 12 title, first top 25 ranking, but most importantly it was the first time the Buffs had gotten an invite to the big dance, the NCAA Tournament.
Â
Finishing the season with a 15-3-1 record and a national ranking of 11, the Buffs awaited to see what seed they would get for the tournament. Although they had been bounced in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament, they felt confident they would be awarded a good seeding for the NCAA Tournament.Â
Â
The news came out in early November and the Buffs leaned they had been given an at-large bid and would be seeded 10th in the Tournament. They then made the short trip over the Rockies to Salt Lake City, Utah to take on the BYU Cougars, who were entering their seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance. While the Buffs would put up a solid fight they faced 17 shots, 11 of which were on goal and fell in the match 2-0 for an early exit. But the all important first step had been taken by CU and 2003 kick started a six-year NCAA Tournament run for the Buffs that really put Colorado on the national map for years to come.Â
The Top 20 Moments of Colorado soccer will be revealed throughout the season as 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first year of the program. Two will be announced per week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
