CU’s women’s Nordic team dominated Saturday’s 5K Classic race, winning the event by 27 points
ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Colorado's women's Nordic team placed three in the top 10 of Saturday's 5K classic race at Kincaid Park, highlight the day where the Buffs moved from fifth to third place in the standings of the UAA Invitational.
Â
Senior Jesse Knori earned her first career race victory while Christina Rolandsen finished right behind her for her second podium finish of the season. Finishing in eighth place, her third top 10 finish of her freshman season, was Anne Siri Lervik.
Â
In all, the Buffalo women's team won the 5K classical with 100 points, 27 ahead of Alaska Anchorage in second.
On the men's side, sophomore Petter Reistad earned his fourth podium finish of the season. His third-place showing in the men's 10K classic helped lead the Buffs to 66 points, finishing third out of seven teams.
Â
Colorado moved up the leaderboard at the UAA Invitational with Saturday's performances. Coming into the day CU stood in fifth place and was 69 points off first place, but now sits in third and 62 points back of Utah in first.
Â
Knori has turned it on in the middle part of her senior season. She was sixth in the 15K classic at the MSU Invitational, then was sixth again on Tuesday in the freestyle sprint in Anchorage for the Seawolf Invitational. Despite Saturday's race-time temperatures reading between four and five degrees, she pushed through to notch her first career victory.
Â
"What's fun about skiing at sea level is that you know as an altitude athlete you can recover so quickly and it's really nice to be able to just tell yourself it's a 5K so you might as well race it as hard as you can the whole race, but you definitely have a couple fights with your mind out on the course," Knori said.
Â
She has had a busy couple of weeks, opening the month of February at the U23 World Championships in Utah and then again on Tuesday and Wednesday in the Seawolf Invitational. She said her focus entering the races in Alaska was acknowledging that her body was tired, but not letting that affect her.
Â
"I was just telling myself to go out and have fun and do whatever your body can do," Knori said. "It seems to be holding up pretty well, I just keep telling it that it can rest back in Boulder. It's definitely been nice to have some more solidified race results on the college circuit this time around."
Â
Senior Mads Stroem placed 16th in the men's 10K and Andrew Potyk came in 18th, the best finish of his freshman season. Max Scrimgeour matched his top finish of the season, as he placed 22nd Saturday.
