February 11, 2017 | Women's Golf

STANFORD, CALIF. —The University of Colorado women's golf team opened its spring season here Saturday and with the first of two rounds complete, the Buffaloes are currently in third at the Peg Barnard Invitational.

WHAT HAPPENED:
The Buffs shot 9-over or 293 as a group on the par 71, 6,084-yard Stanford Golf Course, recording 11 birdies along with 55 pars. Four Pac-12 opponents hold the top four places on the leaderboard with Stanford (A) sitting in first place at 2-over par, 286. Oregon is six strokes back in second place, carding a 292 or 8-over par, as the Buffs are one shot shy of second place. Fourth place belongs to San Jose State, who is in at plus 10 (294), just two strokes ahead of Stanford (B) team (297).

ROBYN CHOI (70):
Choi shot a 1-under 70 to end the day in second place just three strokes off the lead. She put in Colorado's lone sub-par round of the day. She played at 1-over par for most of the day but closed out the final three holes with three straight birdies on No. 15, 16 and 17. Choi collected five birdies on the day the second most among the competitive field.

BRITTANY FAN (72):
Fan finished her 18-hole day in a three-way tie for ninth place after shooting a 1-over par 72.  She had three bogeys on the afternoon, but offset those with two birdies. Fan started from hole 14 and shot three straight pars to start her day. She went on to hit two bogeys on hole No. 5 and 8 but closed out her day with a birdie and four pars.

ESTHER LEE (72):
Senior Esther Lee played a steady first round, shooting a 1-over par 72 to tie for ninth place along with teammate Brittany Fan. Lee shot even par on the front side and a 1-over on the back. She started from hole 16 and shot nine even par holes in a row. She collected 13 pars on the day and two birdies.

KIRSTY HODGKINS (79):
Freshman Hodgkins was up and down throughout the day, finishing at 8-over par, 79 and is tied for 51st overall. Hodgkins teed-off from the 15th hole with a even par and was only 2-over on the front half, but then bogeyed her last four holes to close out the day.

LAURYN KEATING (79):
Keating turned in a 8-over par, 79 scorecard. She shot only 1-over on the front side but really struggled on the back nine collecting four bogeys. She started the day on hole 17 hitting an even par but struggled with the par-4 18th hole posting a 3-over 7 strokes for the hole. Keating is tied for 51st place with teammate Hodgkins.

QUOTABLE: (Head Coach Anne Kelly)
Overall:
We had three players, play very solid rounds. Esther Lee and Brittany Fan shot 1-over. Coming out of winter practice where we really have not putted on real smooth greens for a while. Esther was a bit disappointed with her iron play and Brittany felt like she left a few shots out there. Overall, they drove the ball well off the tee had some very good up and downs and Esther made some good puts. We felt like they played solid today. However, we did leave a few shots out there so looking forward to cleaning that up and improving tomorrow.

On Robyn Choi:
Really happy for Robyn Choi, that is her best round as a college golfer so far. She was not happy with her play from the fall and has been working really hard on some swing changes. She is a very hard worker and I am very happy to see that pay off for her. She had a great finish, birding her last two holes.

On Kirsty Hodgkins
Kirsty, our number two player from the fall struggled today. She had a bad round and she is the type of player that just needs to keep playing on a consistent basis so I am sure she will improve from here. She is a very strong competitor so we are looking forward to tomorrow.
