March 17, 2017 | Track and Field
BOULDER — The University of Colorado track and field team kicked off the 2017 outdoor season strong, as Matthew Denton won the hammer throw here Friday afternoon at Potts Field.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED:Â
The Buffs started the day with the men's hammer throw. Mathew Denton, with a mid-season toss, took home the event title with a 179-9.75 mark that was over five meters farther than the next competitor. Denton's mark earned him a PR in the event beating his previous distance of 168-3 from his 2015 season. Teammate Greyson Webber finished in second place with a toss of 162-8.75.
Â
Elisa Grandemange had a solid afternoon placing second in both her events. Grandemange started her afternoon with the javelin where she threw for a 126-11.50/38.69 mark to finish in second. This was her first appearance as a Buff in the javelin. Grandemange also placed second in the hammer throw with a mark of 172-8.75/52.64.
Â
In the men's Javelin, Andrew Ghizzone finished in fourth place tossing a 142-10.5/43.54 mark. Nate Gravelding had a solid day, advancing to the finals heat and throwing a 133-7/40.71 mark to finish in sixth place and earn a PR in the event. Â Â
NEXT TIME:Â
The Jerry Quiller Classic will continue tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. MT with the Steeplechase on the track and the men's shot put on the field. Full meet schedule is attached. Â
QUOTABLE (Head Coach Mark Wetmore)
"Matthew Denton's mark is the best of the day. I think he struggled a little bit indoors, so he is happy to be outside with a little more room to move. I think 55 is a big mark for him and I think moving in on a mark that might advance him to the regionals. So with five or six more outdoor meets to go, he might get it. Good day for Matthew.
