Buffs Off To Great Start At Cardinal Classic

April 21, 2017 | Track and Field

STANFORD, Calif. – It was another strong day for the University of Colorado track team as the Buffs collected multiple personal records and top-5 finishes here Friday night at the Cardinal Classic.

WHAT HAPPENED:
The women had a successful day in the 800 meters as Dani Jones led the charge finishing third in the invitational heat. Jones clocked a PR time of 2:04.35 which improves her third best CU time of 2:05.27 from last year. Teammates Sage Hurta and Karina Mann both had a strong day in the event as Hurta finished second in their heat with a time of 2:07.15, while Mann crossed the finish line in 2:08.88 to earn a PR time in the event.

Duane McClurkin Jr. took home the 200 meter event title, finishing in 21.08 to win his fourth event this outdoor season. On the women's side, Rajon O'Quinn finished second in the 200 with a time of 24.11, her second best time this year. Teammate Tashay Brown finished seventh, crossing the finish line in 25.00 seconds.

In her long jump debut, freshman Eriana Henderson landed an impressive 19-7.5/5.98 mark to finish sixth overall. This mark places her second on the CU all-time top performers list coming in behind Annette Tannander who earned her mark of 20-8.00 in May of 1983. Teammate Mariah Slack also had a strong day in the long jump as she finished with a PR mark of 19-1.50/5.83 to finish in ninth overall.

In the 5,000 meters, the men saw success as Joe Klecker finished second with a time of 13:42.64. Sophomore John Dressel earned a PR in the event finishing fourth with a time of 13:44.56. Junior Zach Perrin clocked a PR time of 13:46.09 while Ryan Forsyth rounded out the Buffs in the invitational heat finishing 15th with a time of 14:18.90.

Elisa Grandemange put together a strong performance in the hammer throw tossing a season best mark of 180-10/55.12 to place fourth overall.

UP NEXT:
Action continues from the Cardinal Classic tomorrow, Saturday April 22. Events begin at 3:00 MT with the men's high jump.

QUOTABLE (Head Coach Mark Wetmore)
"Some good performances and other some good series of 400 meter hurdle races by Burkes men and Eriana. I believe it was her best time of the year today, and the other guys had solid marks. Not necessarily their best marks, but once again three guys up in the race, looking good."

"Elisa Grandemange had her best throw today in the hammer, moving herself up the list to make it to the regionals. Dani Jones in her outdoor debut had a great day. She earned her best time in the 800 meters, which will make it to regionals. The men in the 5,000 meters ran a strong and steady race for the first one of the year."

"That is what we come here for, to compete against strong competition and earn regional and NCAA marks and we are getting there. I think we got some regional marks today."
