Buffs Tied for Second After Opening Round at Pac-12 Championships
April 24, 2017 | Women's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. –  Freshman Robyn Choi is tied for third place and the 21st ranked University of Colorado women's golf team is tied for second here Monday after the first round of the Pac-12 Championships at the Sewailo Golf Club.
Â
As a group, Colorado combined to shoot 296 or 8-over par and leads the field in par 3 scoring as they averaged 3.10 strokes. The Buffaloes made 48 pars which is only one behind Arizona State (49) who owns the most among any team.
"It was a tough day out there," head coach Anne Kelly said. "The wind blew at least 20 to 30 mph all day long and we had very hot, dry conditions. It made a tough course even tougher. I'm very proud of how the team played today. It took a lot of patience and a lot of mental energy to play this course well today."Â
The Pac-12 Conference, consistently recognized as one of the toughest leagues in women's collegiate golf, has six of its 11 teams ranked in the top-25, including two in the top three with No. 2 ranked Stanford and No. 3 ranked UCLA. UCLA leads the championships at 2-over par 290. Stanford and Colorado sit in second, six strokes behind the leader. No. 7 ranked USC is in fourth place with 16-over 304 while Arizona rounds out the top-five teams finishing the first round at 17-over 305.
Â
Robyn Choi paced the Buffaloes shooting even par 72 on the 6,583 yard course and is currently tied for third. Choi was one of only eight golfers to post an eagle on the day as she carded hers on the No. 8 par five hole. Choi started the day off strong finishing the front nine at 2-under before beginning the back nine which most of the field seemed to struggle with. Although she recorded four bogeys she added two birdies to finish at even par.
"Robyn played very solid today," Kelly said. "But she had a couple bogeys coming in which disappointed her. Overall, she had a very good day and is really becoming a top notch player."
Â
Brittany Fan stayed strong as she opened the tournament at 2-over par 74 and is tied for sixth. Fan's front nine were beautifully consistent as she fired out eight straight pars after starting her day with a birdie on hole No. 1. Along with three of her teammates, Fan also struggled with hole No. 10 as she bogeyed it to start her back nine which was followed by two more bogeys. Fan settled in to fire out four pars and a birdie to finish at 2-over.
Â
Kirsty Hodgkins sits tied for sixth with teammate Fan as she also posted a 2-over 74. Hodgkins opened the tournament on a very strong note firing out back to back birdies to close out her front nine at 1-under. She then struggled on the back nine with most of the field as she recorded two bogeys and a double bogey on hole No. 12. Hodgkins settled down to fire right back with a birdie and three pars. In total, she collected nine pars, four birdies and four bogeys.
"Brittany and Kirsty were very solid as well," Kelly said. "2 over in these conditions is a good round. They played smart golf and hung tough."Â
Â
Esther Lee posted a 4-over 76 in the opening round. While her round was fairly consistent with 12 pars Lee also added five bogeys. She started the day off on a high note birding hole No.1 and was the only Buff to par the tough 10th hole as the rest of the team bogeyed or triple bogeyed the hole. Lee currently sits tied for 22nd overall.
"Esther was playing well and then had an accident when she was on a shuttle from number 9-10 as her pull cart got caught on a curb," Kelly said. "She hurt her wrist, but finished the round which was impressive. We don't know what her status will be for tomorrow. She showed true heart by finishing the round today and I'm hoping it's just a minor injury and nothing that will be prolonged. We just don't know yet."
Â
In her Pac-12 Championships debut, Lauryn Keating finished the day with a 12-over par 84. Keating put together a 4-over front nine but struggled on the first few holes on the back as she carded back to back triple bogeys on hole no. 10 and 11.
"Lauryn struggled today, but will be more prepared tomorrow and have a better idea of what to expect," Kelly said.Â
Â
UCLA's Lilia Vu and Bethan Wu hold the top spot, shooting 1-under par 71. They are only one stroke ahead of Andrea Lee of Stanford and CU's Robyn Choi in third place at even par 72. Mariel Galdiano of UCLA rounds out the top-five individuals as she posted a 1-over 73.
Â
The Pac-12 Championships continue on Tuesday with the second round slated to begin at 8:00 a.m. The Buffs will Tee of on hole No. 1 at 8:40 a.m. with USC.Â
