Two School Records Fall In First Day Of The Pac-12 Combined Event Championships

May 06, 2017 | Track and Field

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Colorado sophomore Isaiah Oliver is sitting in first place with 4,006 points in the decathlon after breaking two Colorado records, one that he owned already, on his way to a great first day here at the Pac-12 Combined Event Championships at the Whyte Track and Field Center.

Sitting in sixth place after the first round of events with 3,524 is Colorado junior Andrew Ghizzone rounding out the men for Colorado.

As for the women's heptathlon sophomore Maja Wichhart-Donzo is leading the Buffs sitting in seventh place with 3,099 points.  Junior Michaela Wenning sits twelfth with 2,819 points, fellow junior Mariah Slack is right behind her at thirteenth with 2,733 and freshman Drianna Mustin rounds out the Buff women sitting fourteenth with 2,675 points.

Oliver's Day:  Oliver started the day off in style breaking two school records in the first two events of the day.  In the 100-meters Oliver scorched the race in 11.82 seconds which broke the school record that Oliver himself had set previously in the season.

Oliver followed that up by leaping past the previous Colorado record in the long jump, recording a distance of 24-1.75/7.36 on his way to what already was his second win in just the first two events.

After Oliver's torrid start to the decathlon he sat in first place with 1,801 points and a lead that he wouldn't relinquish for the remainder of the day.

Next up was the shot put, and Oliver put together yet another top performance.  He recorded a distance of 42-2.5/12.87 for a second-place finish, helping to pad his overall lead.

Oliver recorded a seventh-place clearance of 5-11.5/1.82 in the high jump, but he returned for the final event on the day, the 400-meters, determined to hold onto his overall lead heading into the second day.

In that 400-meters race Oliver did just that, recording what's now the second fastest time in CU history, finishing the race in 48.15 seconds to solidify his lead heading into the final day with 4,006 total points.

Women's Heptathlon Highlights: While the day didn't go according to plan for the Buff women, in the 200-meters, the final event of the day, Wichhart-Donzo raced to a second-place finish in the race recording a time of 25.04 seconds.  The great finish, the best for a Buff woman on the day, put Wichhart-Donzo in shouting distance of a top five finish in the final day sitting at seventh with 3,009 points.

Noteworthy:  In the 400-meters Colorado's Ghizzone put together his best performance of the day, finishing in second place recording a time of 48.89, which is now the eight fastest time in CU history.  Ghizzone himself is set up for a great finish as well sitting in sixth place with 3,524 points and some of his better events ahead in the second and final day.

Quoteworthy: (CU Coach Lindsey Malone): "Isaiah had a bunch of PR's tonight and he broke the school record in the long jump which is great.  If we can keep this pace up for tomorrow it'll be really thrilling.  Andrew had a very solid day and finished up with an amazing 400-meters race, his time was tremendous.  On the men's side, we're looking great and Isaiah is such a competitor that I can't wait to see what he does tomorrow.  On the women's side, all the women had great days and they each had PR's for their first day, and the women are looking very strong.  I'd have to say that the performance of the day was Isaiah's long jump and then Isaiah and Andrew going one-two in the 400-meters.  We want to earn a lot of points so we're looking forward to a big day in day two."

Up Next: On Sunday, the Buffs return to action with the final day of both the decathlon and the heptathlon and a Pac-12 Champion will be crowned in both events.  The men start the day at 11:30 a.m. MT with the 110-meter hurdles and from there the women's heptathlon will pick back up starting with the long jump at 12:45 a.m. MT.
