Top 20 Soccer Moments: No. 18

BOULDER -Â After failing to win a match on three previous trips to the Big 12 Tournament, Colorado finally broke through and notched the first postseason win in school history upsetting Missouri 1-0, on Nov. 7, 2002.

CU finished the regular season 9-7-2 (4-4-2 Big 12) and made the trip to San Antonio for the tournament seeded fifth and drew the fourth-seeded Missouri Tigers in the first round. CU had been to the tournament three times before, including a 5-3 loss against Missouri just three years before in 1999.

Entering the match, CU wasn't expected to win, and the first half went by without anyone moving the back of the net. But it was freshman and 2002 Big 12 Rookie of the Year Fran Munnelly who answered the call for the Buffs scoring the match's lone goal in the 52nd minute. It was her seventh of the season, which still sits in CU's record books at fourth all-time for goals scored in a freshman season.

CU was able to play from the back and hold the line against Missouri for the last half-hour to secure the big time win. It was only the second time in program history that CU was able to get to at least ten wins in a season, and the Buffs would finish with double digit wins in their next six seasons.

It was a historic win for a program that was less than 10 years old, and quickly was becoming a force to deal with in the Big 12.
The Top 20 Moments of Colorado soccer will be revealed throughout the season as 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first year of the program. Two will be announced per week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
