Ketterer Opens RMISA Championships with Win for Buffs

February 24, 2017 | Skiing

CU as a team sits in third place at RMISA Championship after day one and two of eight events

AVON, Colo. – University of Colorado freshman David Ketterer picked an opportune time to win his first career giant slalom race, doing so Friday at Beaver Creek Resort on the first day of the 2017 RMISA/NCAA West Regional Championships.

His win, in addition to top 10 finishes from Ola Johansen (sixth) and Max Luukko (eighth), helped propel the CU men's alpine team to a win in the giant slalom race on the first day of the championships.

"On the men's side, I think it was mission accomplished," head coach Richard Rokos said. "We were trying to move David up from where he was (on the NCAA qualification list) and move him into the top five. I think we're close to getting guys in the top five just for the sake of scoring and seeding at the NCAAs."

Men's and women's combined, CU sits in third place among the six teams that competed Friday in the giant slalom races. The Buffs earned a total of 149 points. Denver was second with 152.5 and Montana State leads all schools with a first day total of 172 points.

The men's team, behind the three top 10 finishes, earned 90 points to edge Utah by 23 for the race victory. On the women's side, CU finished in fourth with 59 points.

Ketterer won four slalom races entering the championships, but had yet to win a giant slalom event.  It is an event he has been working on improving at all season and he got off to a hot start on Friday by having the fastest time in the field on the first run with his 50.59 finish.

"The first run was pretty good," Ketterer said. "I had a bib one, so I had a slight advantage because I had a perfect slope. I think I definitely delivered my best training run. The second run was little tougher, because the slope was kind of rutty. I still think I managed to put it down clean and ended up with a win."

Ketterer's five overall wins this season have tied for the second-most in a season in school history with John Skajem's five in 1987. Skajem holds the men's alpine record with his seven wins in 1986. The last men's alpine skier to win the giant slalom at the RMISA Championships was Andreas Haug in 2014.

Along with Ketterer winning the first run, Johansen had the fastest time on the second run that helped move him up from 15th place into a finish for sixth. With Luukko's eighth-place finish, he now has placed inside the top eight in 10 of his 11 races this season.

Senior Roger Carry recorded his best finish of the season in any race, slalom or giant slalom, as he placed 13th with a two-run time of 1:46.70.

"Roger, I think that was his last GS and he showed his ability very well," Rokos said of his senior. "Having his father here from Canada helps as well."

Leading the women's side was sophomore Tonje Trulsrud, who finished eighth, and freshman Isabella Fidjeland, who placed in 10th. This was Fidjeland's first career race on the collegiate circuit, as she missed all of the regular season due to an injury sustained in the fall.

"Bella is still coming back from injury and having a little hesitation in her runs, but is improving day-by-day," Rokos said. "Otherwise, Tonje was slightly below her standard. Overall, I'd say Megan [McGrew] had a great day today, at least in the first round she did very well. The rest of the girls are filling up right behind the first group."

The Buffs are back at it Saturday when the alpine teams compete in the slalom races and the Nordic teams kick off their first races of the meet with the 5/10K classic.

"Slalom was not our stronger event last year or this year, so obviously we don't have too much to lose there," Rokos said. "We need to work on some improvement of our seeding positions in the NCAAs. Otherwise, we need to just go for it."
