Buffs Give Strong Showing In Opening Meet

September 01, 2017 | Cross Country

BOULDER — Colorado's cross country teams started the season off on a strong note, winning the men's and women's team titles at the Colorado State Invitational on Friday night.

The men's team handily defeated the rest of the field, totaling just 22 points, while the runner-up, Air Force, was second with 66 points. The women's race was much closer with the Buffs besting Colorado State by one point (35-36).

MEN'S RACE: Junior Ethan Gonzales recorded the individual win on Friday, finishing the 5k race in 14:51. Just three seconds behind him was redshirt freshman Eduardo Herrera who was running in his first uniformed race as a Buff.

The rest of the scoring team crossed the finish in a tight pack. Sophomore Joe Klecker was fifth overall, finishing just ahead of senior Zach Perrin (sixth) and senior Ryan Forsyth (seventh), who all came in at 14:56. Although he did not score, senior Christian Martin recorded a top-10 finish, placing ninth (15:02).

WOMEN'S RACE: The top uniformed runner for the women's team was sophomore Brianna Schwartz, who placed fourth in 17:37. Redshirt freshman Madie Boreman was the second scorer for the team, placing eighth overall with the same time as Schwartz.

The other three Buffs who contributed to the team score were senior Melanie Nun (11th, 18:10), junior Val Constien (16th, 18:19) and Karina Mann (18th, 18:22).

The team score against CSU was a little misleading as the Buffs ran several members of their varsity roster unattached. Junior Makena Morley was third overall (17:37), junior Dani Jones placed fifth (17:37) and Sage Hurta took seventh (17:37).

UP NEXT: The Buffs will be back in action on Sept. 30 when they host the Rocky Mountain Shootout in Boulder.
