Top 20 Soccer Moments: No. 15

September 12, 2016 | Soccer

BOULDER—Colorado had relished in success during the first 10 years of the decade, ripping off seven consecutive winning seasons starting in 2002, but one thing they hadn't done was beat a nationally ranked inside the top 10 team.  On Sep. 24, 2010 the Buffs took care of that milestone, handing the No. 5 Texas A & M Aggies a 2-1 overtime loss at College Station, Texas.

Entering the game, CU was riding high, having knocked off nationally-ranked No. 10 UCLA 1-0 in double overtime the previous weekend in Boulder.  So the Buffs felt good entering their last season of play in the Big 12, with the switch over to the newly expanded Pac-12 scheduled for the next season.

CU wanted to make their last trip to College Station a memorable one, and junior Kate Russell made sure she started things off right for the Buffs.  In only the fourth minute of the game, Russell fired a shot from 30 yards out giving CU a quick and early lead.

Things remained 1-0 CU for 56 minutes of play, but in the 57th minute Texas A & M scored the equalizer, bringing the 2,000 Aggie fans to their feet and adding to the intensity of the game.  The score remained tied for the last half hour as the game entered overtime.

That's were freshman Lizzy Herzl was able to show her quickly growing flair for the dramatic.  Just the previous week Herzl had scored the winning goal against UCLA, ending the game in the 108th minute of double overtime.  So Herzl was ready to step up again in the big pressure moment for the Buffs.

Herzi didn't wait as long as she had the previous week, scoring her second straight golden goal at the 99th minute of the first overtime, giving CU the huge 2-1 victory.

It's still the highest-ranked team that CU has ever beaten, and the Buffs were able to put a massive victory under the program's already packed belt of accomplishments.

The Top 20 Moments of Colorado soccer will be revealed throughout the season as 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first year of the program. Two will be announced per week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
