Top 20 Soccer Moments: No. 12

BOULDER – After announcing that women's soccer would be added as a varsity sport in 1993, the Buffs had to wait three more years until they played their first game.  And on Aug. 31, 1996 CU traveled to Bakersfield, Calif., to play the inaugural game in program history.  The Buffs didn't have to wait long for the program's first goal, when in the 77th freshman Shawn Kenyon headed-in the first goal in school history, on route to a 1-1 tie against Cal State Bakersfield.

The team wasn't entirely inexperienced heading into the first game, returning sixteen players from the previous season's team that won the national championship while playing on the club level.  So the team was ready to make the trip and to start checking off milestones for the new program.

The game didn't start exactly in the Buffs favor, as Cal State jumped on the Buffs early, stealing a ball that was played poorly setting up the first goal in the 10th minute of the game.  The Buffs might have fallen behind early in their first match, but the Buffs didn't seem to be affected as CU kept on the offensive throughout the game.

As the second half started, CU turned on the pressure connecting for 12 shots on goal through the half, eventually ending up with a total of 17 shots on goal for the match.  And as the half moved along, the attack-minded Buffs had their hard work rewarded.

In the 77th minute Kenyon put herself in the Buffs record books, heading home the first goal in CU history to tie the game.  CU wouldn't be able to score again for the remainder of the match, but they remained aggressive throughout the two overtime periods settling for the 1-1 draw.

The Buffs would build on their early aggressive style, returning home the next weekend and achieving the first win in school history against LSU 2-1 on Sep. 8.  Although the season wouldn't end with an above .500 record, the team's aggressive style of play netted 22 goals for the Buffs in their first season of play.

The Top 20 Moments of Colorado soccer will be revealed throughout the season as 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first year of the program. Two will be announced per week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
