Top 20 Soccer Moments: No. 11
September 26, 2016 | Soccer
BOULDER – One of the most important positions in soccer is the goalkeeper. The keeper is the last line of defense against an attack, and can make or break the team with key saves at key moments. For the University of Colorado, the most credited goalkeeper in history was Sloane Cox. And in 1998 she entered her senior year poised to enter not only CU's record books, but the Big-12's all-time record books as well. By the time the season ended, Cox had recorded a Big-12 record 188 saves during the year, a number that still stands to this day ending her career at CU with her name securely enshrined in the Big-12's books.
Entering the season, Cox sat second all-time on CU's career save list with 133 saves and needed 26 to become the new leader in career saves. She recorded 21 saves in the first two games of the season, and entered the third game against BYU needing five saves to break the record. Cox got more than five, she recorded 19 saves throughout the game. And even though the Buffs dropped the match 5-2 Cox had solidified herself in the CU record books. But Cox had set her sights much higher and she still had work to do.
She began ripping through the Big-12, averaging a still Big-12 best 9.51 saves per game. While on her tear Cox recorded nine double digit save games, including five of those games being against Big-12 competition. And as the season rolled along it became clear that Cox was knocking on the door of history.
As conference play continued, Cox entered the 15th game of the season against the Texas Longhorns sitting with 147 saves on the season and needed only two saves to break the previous record of 148 set the season before in 1997 by Jen Fecke of Kansas.
It didn't take Cox long to set the record, as she would end up with 10 saves in the game, and when the game ended she was the single season saves record holder and Cox only looked to expand the record.
Since Cox set the new record, which ended up being 188 saves for the season, only Catherine Wade of Oklahoma has come close to Cox's massive number of saves. In 2003 Wade recorded 151 saves, and sits in second place all-time giving Cox a 37 save lead in the books. A lead that hasn't dwindled past that point in 17 years.
Cox would end up with a total number of 321 saves in her career, which is also the all-time record for career saves in CU's history. A mark that much like her season record, shows no chance of being broken anytime soon.
The Top 20 Moments of Colorado soccer will be revealed throughout the season as 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first year of the program. Two will be announced per week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
