Top 20 Soccer Moments: No. 10

BOULDER – In 2003 sophomore Fran Munnelly entered the season attempting to tackle the stereotype of a sophomore slump.  She had won the Big-12 Rookie of the Year award following the 2002 season, so she entered 2003 with high expectations coming off a historic freshman season.  Munnelly didn't disappoint, being named the 2003 Big 12 Player of the Year, scoring six times along with recording seven assists.  She finished her second tour with 19 points on the season and the idea of a sophomore slump firmly in the past.

Munnelly earned many more accolades starting in the preseason and carrying on through the season.  She was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 team, she earned Big 12 player of the week several times during the season, and she was named to First-Team All-Big 12 team once the season was over

She recorded 19 points, seven assists, and put in six goals on 53 shots through her award winning season.  Her seven assists during the 2003 season still puts Munnelly second on CU's all-time assists leaders for a sophomore.

CU went into the season with high expectations, and a very talented to team ready to meet those expectations.  The Buffs ended the season meeting just about every goal they set, finishing with a program best record of 15-4-1 (8-1-1 Big-12).  And earning the program's first NCAA Tournament bid.

Leading the way was Munnelly, who was a leader on a young team that fielded only three seniors.  She was coming off her Big 12 Rookie of the year season and wanted nothing to do with the second year blues.  Included in the six goals and seven assists were game winning goals or assists from Munnelly against then ranked No. 9 Denver, Seton Hall, San Jose State, and at Texas Tech.

It was a great sophomore season for Munnelly, who was able to get past any second year slides, and put together one of the better season ever put together by a Buff.  During one of the greatest seasons ever had by CU's women's soccer team.

The Top 20 Moments of Colorado soccer will be revealed throughout the season as 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first year of the program. Two will be announced per week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
