Top 20 Soccer Moments: No. 8

BOULDER – When a champion comes to town, people want to go out and see them.  And on Sep. 4, 1998 that champion was the University of North Carolina and 3,000 people descended on the Pleasant View Soccer Complex to see CU take on the defending NCAA national champions in their first action since raising the trophy.

Although CU lost the match 2-0, senior Sloane Cox put on a show collecting 14 saves and keeping the score much closer then it could have been against the reigning champs.  It was the biggest crowd that CU had ever had, and would have while playing at Pleasant View Soccer Complex.  It was also the highest level of completion that the young program had ever faced, playing in only its third year of existence.

The loss might have come, but confidence was gained by the Buffs, as they won their next match against George Washington University 4-1.  George Washington would end up going on an eight game winning streak shortly after playing the Buffs, but they couldn't handle the quickly growing CU soccer program.

CU did finish the season 5-12-3 (2-6-2 Big 12), but it was the next year that the game against North Carolina and the large home crowd seemed to come back around.  In 1999 CU finished above .500 overall for the first time in program history, going 11-8-1 (4-5-1 Big 12).  But it was what they did at home that really solidified an atmosphere that was first realized on that early September day.

Through the 1999 season CU went 9-1-1 at home, really proving that the Pleasant View Soccer Complex had become a special place for the Buffs to play at, but it had also become a tough place for anyone else to play at.  That feeling now felt at the complex stemmed from a champion's visit just the year before.

The Top 20 Moments of Colorado soccer will be revealed throughout the season as 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first year of the program. Two will be announced per week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
