Top 20 Soccer Moments: No. 7

October 10, 2016 | Soccer

BOULDER – In 2014 CU welcomed the NCAA Tournament to Boulder for the first time since back-to-back hosting duties in 2006 and 2007.  The Buffs first round opponent were the BYU Cougars, but the Cougars weren't the only guests in Boulder, as mother nature decided to attend the game as well bringing with her a mid-November snow storm.  And on Nov. 11, 2014 under several inches of snow and below freezing weather the Buffs defended their home pitch winning 2-0 to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season. The match has been dubbed, "Snow Clasico 2."

The Buffs finished off a solid regular season with a four game unbeaten streak and they finished with a 13-6-1 (6-4-1 Pac-12) record to earn the right of hosting the NCAA Tournament's first round.  And when they drew BYU they had the confidence knowing that they had beaten the Cougars the year before 2-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  But as game day drew near, the weather began to take center stage.

Snow started falling hours before kickoff, and the temperature dropped and kept dropping.  By the time kickoff rolled around, the temperature was 16 degrees with a wind chill factor of six degrees.  Snow was still falling as the Buffs took the field, without any leggings and very little protection from the elements.  CU was ready to tackle both the elements and the Cougars.

As the game started CU showed very little ill-effect to the weather as in the 7th minute junior Olivia Pappalardo launched a shot from 20 yards out, sending it over the right side of the BYU goalie to give the Buffs an early 1-0 lead.

As the game went along, the snow slowed up but the temperature didn't improve, in fact when the second half started the temperature had dropped to 14 degrees, and it would stay there for the last 45 minutes.

Still refusing to dress up to the weather, the Buffs looked to keep the pressure on throughout the second half.  And in the 53rd minute, less then 10 minutes removed from the comfort of the warm locker rooms, CU struck again as junior Madison Krauser took a ball on the left side of the net, rocketing it past the diving keeper to give CU the 2-0 lead they would hold for the remainder of the match.

Junior goalkeeper Kate Scheele faced 20 shots from BYU, seven of them on goal, as she played her part locking down the CU net.  The weather seemed to slow down BYU as they only recorded eight shots in the second half as compared to the 12 they sent at the net in the first half.  But the weather didn't slow down the Buffs one bit as they rolled through the Cougars.

It was a cold day in Boulder, but the Buffs warmed up the pitch with two goals punching their ticket to the second round and creating a memory on Prentup Field that will last a lifetime, known simply as the snow game.

The Top 20 Moments of Colorado soccer will be revealed throughout the season as 2016 marks the 20th Anniversary of the first year of the program. Two will be announced per week on Mondays and Wednesdays.
